Course Map & Elevation
Course Overview
A point-to-point course with approximately 300m of elevation gain, featuring a relentless 21km climb from km 10 to km 31 peaking at 240m, followed by a fast 10km descent into Athens. This is not a PR course — it is a pilgrimage to the birthplace of the marathon, and the one thing that makes it unique is that the sustained mid-race climb comes when your legs are already tired.
Key Segments
Marathon to the Coast
Terrain: Gentle descent from 28m to sea level (5m), flat coastal section near Nea Makri
Challenge: The easy downhill start tempts aggressive early splits that will be paid back with interest on the long climb
Tactic: Treat this as a warm-up. Run 10-15 sec/km slower than your goal average. Bank energy, not time.
The Signature Climb
Terrain: Sustained 1-3% uphill grade gaining roughly 235m from sea level to the summit at 240m. Exposed roads with minimal shade.
Challenge: A 21km climb through the critical middle miles is unlike any other major marathon. Effort spikes even at moderate temperatures.
Tactic: Run entirely by effort, not pace. Accept splits 15-30 sec/km slower than flat-ground pace. Shorten stride, increase cadence, and fuel aggressively — take gels on the climb even though it feels harder to eat while working uphill.
Descent into Athens
Terrain: Sharp descent dropping roughly 190m over 9km through Chalandri and Psychiko suburbs into central Athens
Challenge: The downhill punishes quads that have been climbing for 21km. Braking forces accumulate rapidly.
Tactic: Open your stride cautiously — do not overstride. Lean slightly forward and let gravity carry you. This is where patient early runners make up massive time on those who pushed the climb.
Panathenaic Stadium Finish
Terrain: Gently rolling urban roads at 36-50m, finishing inside the marble Panathenaic Stadium
Challenge: Fatigue masks the emotion of the finish. You must save something for the stadium entry.
Tactic: Focus on form for the final 2km. The finish inside the marble Kallimarmaro is one of the most emotional moments in distance running — savor it.
Race-Specific Training
- •Train on sustained uphill grades of 1-3% for 15-20km to build the specific muscular endurance needed for the relentless mid-race climb
- •Practice efficient downhill running on descents of 3-5km to eccentrically condition your quads for the sharp Athens descent after 31km of climbing
- •Do at least two 32-35km long runs on hilly terrain with the final 10km on a downhill to simulate the climb-then-descend race structure
Conditions & Environment
Altitude
Start at 28m, summit at 240m, finish at 36m. No altitude concerns but the sustained climb increases effort significantly.
Weather
November. Typical race temps 12-18C (54-64F). Rarely too cold; occasional warm days can reach 22C (72F).
Sun & Wind
Exposed roads from Marathon to Rafina offer little shade in midday sun. Sunglasses and sunscreen recommended. Possible headwind on coastal section.
What to Wear
Light singlet and shorts for most conditions. Arm sleeves for early morning chill that can be removed as you warm up on the climb.
Pacing Strategy
| Segment | Pace | Note |
|---|---|---|
| km 0-10 | 10-15 sec/km slower than goal average | Easy downhill to the coast. Bank energy, not time. |
| km 10-31 | Effort-based, 15-30 sec/km slower than flat pace | The 21km climb. Run by heart rate or perceived effort. Do not chase pace numbers. |
| km 31-40 | Goal pace or faster | Fast descent. Release the energy you banked on the climb. Do not overstride. |
| km 40-42.195 | Whatever you have left | Flat run into the Panathenaic Stadium. Save something for the marble entrance. |
Race Day Tip
The bus ride from Athens to the Marathon start takes 45-60 minutes. Bring warm throwaway clothes and food for the wait — the staging area is exposed and the November morning can be chilly before the sun warms things up.
