Course Overview

A pancake-flat loop course sitting 2-8m above sea level on the Chao Phraya river delta, with virtually zero elevation change. The course loops through central Bangkok neighbourhoods starting and finishing at Sanam Luang near the Royal Grand Palace. What makes Bangkok unique is that the race is almost entirely a heat-and-humidity survival challenge rather than a terrain challenge, with a 2:00-3:00 AM start to dodge the worst of the tropical conditions.

Key Segments

km 0–12

Sanam Luang to Silom via Chinatown

Terrain: Dead flat urban roads, 3-5m elevation, narrow streets through Chinatown opening to wider avenues

Challenge: The pre-dawn adrenaline and cool-by-Bangkok-standards temperatures tempt aggressive opening splits that will destroy you in the heat later

Tactic: Run 15-20 sec/km slower than cool-weather goal pace. The heat tax is real — bank energy, not time. Use Chinatown's neon-lit atmosphere to stay relaxed.

km 12–27

Silom to Sathorn via Lumphini

Terrain: Flat wide avenues, some tree cover near Lumphini Park, otherwise exposed urban roads

Challenge: Humidity becomes crushing as the body's core temperature climbs; this is where runners who went out too fast begin to collapse

Tactic: Drink at every single aid station. Take ice when available — wrists and neck. Run by heart rate, not pace. If HR drifts above zone 3, slow immediately.

km 27–38

Sathorn Return to Rattanakosin

Terrain: Flat return legs through Silom and Charoen Krung, passing Wat Pho and temple district

Challenge: Slower runners face sunrise and radiated heat from pavement; glycogen depletion and hyperthermia risk peaks at km 28-32

Tactic: Force nutrition even if appetite is suppressed. Soak your cap with water at every station. Shorten stride and keep cadence high — do not fight the slowdown, manage it.

km 38–42.195

Rattanakosin Finish Loop

Terrain: Flat heritage district roads back to Sanam Luang

Challenge: Morning sun exposure and accumulated heat stress make the final kilometres feel far harder than the flat terrain warrants

Tactic: Focus on reaching the next aid station. The Grand Palace will come into view — use it as your beacon. Even a modest finishing effort feels triumphant after surviving the heat.

Race-Specific Training

  • Do your long runs and tempo sessions in the hottest, most humid part of the day for 6-8 weeks before the race to trigger plasma volume expansion and improved cardiovascular heat efficiency
  • Practice a post-run sauna protocol (20-30 minutes, 4-5 times per week for 3 weeks) if you cannot train in tropical heat — this raises plasma volume by 5-10%
  • Train your gut to accept 500-1000mg sodium per hour alongside fluids while running, as tropical sweat losses of 1-2 litres per hour demand aggressive electrolyte replacement

Conditions & Environment

Altitude

Essentially sea level at 2-8m. No altitude concerns whatsoever.

Weather

November race. Temperatures 25-33C (77-91F) with relative humidity consistently above 70%, often 85%+. Wet-bulb conditions severely limit sweat evaporation.

Sun & Wind

Pre-dawn start (2:00-3:00 AM) means no direct sun for most runners. Slower runners face sunrise around km 30-35. Limited wind in urban canyons. Oppressive humidity is the primary factor.

What to Wear

Light-coloured moisture-wicking singlet and shorts. No cotton. A moisture-wicking cap with a brim for sunrise protection. Apply sunscreen even for the pre-dawn start.

Pacing Strategy

SegmentPaceNote
km 0-1215-20 sec/km slower than cool-weather goal paceThe most common Bangkok mistake is running the first 10km at cool-weather effort. If your HR is above zone 3 on this flat course, you are already in trouble.
km 12-27Effort-based, heart rate in zone 2-3Drink at every station without exception. Do not rely on thirst — in humid heat, thirst lags dangerously behind fluid deficit.
km 27-38Survival pace — accept the slowdownForce ice on wrists and neck. Force nutrition. If you feel strong, hold steady — do not surge.
km 38-42.195Whatever you have leftPush gently if you executed the first 38km with restraint. The Grand Palace finish rewards patient runners.

Race Day Tip

Most runners from cool climates add 15-25 minutes to their cool-weather personal best in Bangkok conditions. Arrive 10-14 days early for proper heat acclimatization — no amount of fitness compensates for an unacclimatized body in tropical humidity.
