Course Overview

One of Europe's flattest urban marathon courses, with roughly 40m of total elevation gain spread across the full distance, entirely between 5m and 28m above sea level. The single-loop course starts and finishes at Placa d'Espanya near Montjuic. The defining feature is the gentle early descent toward the waterfront followed by dead-flat boulevards, making it an excellent PB course — but the Eixample grid's many right-angle turns in the second half tax the legs more than the elevation profile suggests.

Key Segments

km 0–10

Descent to the Waterfront

Terrain: Gentle descent from 28m at Placa d'Espanya to 5-8m at the harbour, passing through Eixample and down La Rambla

Challenge: The slight descent masks effort and can leave you with tired quads for the second half. Crowd energy at La Rambla and Passeig de Gracia tempts surges.

Tactic: Run the first 10km at least 5 sec/km slower than target pace. Do not bank time on the descent — save your legs.

km 10–18

Waterfront & Port Olimpic

Terrain: Flat, exposed roads along Port Vell, Barceloneta beach, and Port Olimpic at 5-8m elevation

Challenge: The prevailing morning breeze comes off the Mediterranean from the east-southeast. This is the most wind-exposed section.

Tactic: Tuck into a pace group and share the workload. Do not fight the headwind by increasing pace — hold effort steady.

km 18–30

Inland Climb & Sagrada Familia

Terrain: Gentle rises of 3-5m as the terrain lifts away from the coast, through Poblenou and Sant Andreu (northernmost point) then south past Sagrada Familia

Challenge: Not steep, but after 20km of running these subtle climbs require attention. The Eixample grid means many right-angle turns that cost energy.

Tactic: Shorten stride slightly on any uphill. Stay on the racing line (inside of turns). Maintain rhythm through the corners.

km 30–42.195

Eixample Grid Return to Montjuic

Terrain: Grid streets with frequent turns, then a very gentle climb from 14m back to 28m approaching Placa d'Espanya

Challenge: The many 90-degree turns in the Eixample grid tax legs through constant deceleration and re-acceleration. The gentle final climb toward the finish feels much harder than it is.

Tactic: Maintain rhythm through the turns. Keep hips forward, arms low, and breathing steady in the final 4km climb. Focus on form, not pace.

Race-Specific Training

  • Practice running at race pace through frequent turns to prepare for the Eixample grid — each 90-degree corner costs energy through deceleration and re-acceleration that adds up over 10+ km
  • Include at least one training run with a mild headwind section to simulate the exposed waterfront stretch along the Mediterranean
  • Focus on flat tempo runs and marathon-pace long runs of 30-35km since the course has virtually no sustained hills — pace discipline and fuelling strategy matter more than strength

Conditions & Environment

Altitude

Sea level. Course ranges from 5m to 28m. No altitude concerns.

Weather

Pacing Strategy

SegmentPaceNote
km 0-105 sec/km slower than goal paceDescending toward the waterfront. Do not bank time — the early descent is not free.
km 10-18Goal paceFlat waterfront. Draft if windy. Settle into rhythm.
km 18-30Goal pace, effort-based on gentle risesInland section with subtle climbs. Take the Sagrada Familia crowd energy but do not surge.
km 30-42.195Goal pace or fasterEixample grid return. Maintain rhythm through turns. Push the gentle final climb to Montjuic.

Race Day Tip

The Eixample grid streets look identical — do not lose focus navigating turns after km 30. Let the crowd energy at La Rambla, Passeig de Gracia, and Sagrada Familia carry you through the middle kilometres, but do not let excitement push you above your planned effort.
