Course Overview

A flat point-to-point course with only 30m of total elevation gain, running from Tiananmen Square through Beijing's western districts to the Olympic Park. The course sits between 41m and 55m above sea level. The defining challenge is Beijing's variable air quality — monitoring AQI forecasts and arriving early to acclimatize your lungs is as important as any physical training.

Key Segments

km 0–10

Tiananmen Square and Chang'an Avenue

Terrain: Flat, dropping gently from 44m to 48m westbound along one of the widest boulevards in the world

Challenge: The electric atmosphere of running past Tiananmen Gate and through Beijing's historic core tempts aggressive early splits

Tactic: Run 5-10 sec/km slower than goal pace. The crowd excitement, cool October air, and spectacle have caused many runners to bank the first 10km too aggressively.

km 10–22

Western Districts Loop

Terrain: Gently rolling between 44m and 55m through wide urban streets with fewer spectators, broad and residential

Challenge: Mental discipline matters most here. Fewer spectators and monotonous urban scenery can cause loss of focus.

Tactic: Maintain your own pace and focus. Keep fueling on schedule — take every water and sports drink station seriously even if you feel fine.

km 22–34

Olympic Park Section

Terrain: Gentle rise to the course high point (~55m) near the Bird's Nest and Water Cube, then descending back through the Olympic precinct

Challenge: The slight climb arrives at the traditional wall distance. Crowd support picks up again, tempting surges.

Tactic: If you banked discipline in the western loop, this is where patience pays. Use the visual inspiration of the Olympic landmarks but stay anchored to your pace.

km 34–42.195

Southbound to Finish

Terrain: Gentle descent from 43m to 44m, flat final stretch to Olympic Sports Center

Challenge: Uniform flat fatigue without hills to break up stride pattern. Mental grinding in the final 8km.

Tactic: Maintain form and cadence. The course is forgiving here — execute your closing strategy. Crowd support builds in the final 2km.

Race-Specific Training

  • Monitor Beijing AQI in the weeks before the race. If traveling from a low-pollution area, arrive 3-4 days early to allow lungs to adjust. Consider a lightweight air filtration mask for pre-race warm-up.
  • Build long runs on flat terrain to rehearse sustained load on the same muscle groups — the continuous flatness demands specific muscular endurance
  • Practice running the second half of long runs at goal marathon pace to develop the specific endurance needed for a flat, fast course

Conditions & Environment

Altitude

Course between 41m and 55m above sea level. No altitude concerns.

Weather

October race. Start temps typically 8-12°C (46-54°F), rising to 15-20°C (59-68°F) by mid-morning. Cool, crisp air at the gun.

Sun & Wind

Variable. October typically brings cleaner air after summer. Check AQI forecasts using IQAir or AirVisual in the days before the race.

What to Wear

Layers that can be discarded or tied around your waist for the first few kilometers. Single layer by km 5 for most conditions.

Pacing Strategy

SegmentPaceNote
km 0-105-10 sec/km slower than goal paceThe spectacle of Tiananmen and Chang'an Avenue tempts aggressive splits. Bank discipline, not time.
km 10-22Goal paceQuieter western districts. Run your own race, maintain focus and fueling schedule.
km 22-34Goal pace, effort-based on the climbOlympic Park section. Use the landmark energy but stay anchored to your plan through the gentle rise.

Race Day Tip

Beijing's subway system is extensive and reliable — familiarize yourself with the lines to the start (Tiananmen) and finish (Olympic Sports Center) areas to avoid stress on race morning. Allow 5-7 days for full time zone adjustment if traveling from Europe or the Americas.
