Course Overview

The flattest and fastest marathon course in the world, holding both the men's and women's world records. Total elevation gain is under 20m with no meaningful hills on a loop course through central Berlin. The one thing that makes Berlin unique is that there is literally nothing on the course to slow you down — which makes pacing discipline the single most important skill.

Key Segments

km 0–12

Tiergarten to Karl-Marx-Allee

Terrain: Dead flat, wide boulevards through Moabit and Wedding, then the iconic Karl-Marx-Allee straightaway

Challenge: The excitement of 45,000 runners and wide-open roads makes it dangerously easy to go out 10-20 sec/km too fast

Tactic: Treat Karl-Marx-Allee (km 10-12) as your pacing checkpoint: if you feel like you are working at all, you are going too fast. Run by feel, not watch.

km 12–25

Kreuzberg and Neukolln Loop

Terrain: Flat through southern Berlin districts with wide streets and good crowd support at Hermannplatz

Challenge: The midrace stretch can feel monotonous on dead-flat terrain with fewer landmarks. Mental focus drifts.

Tactic: Settle into goal pace and lock in rhythm. This is the working section — efficient, metronomic running. Take gel by km 22-24.

km 25–38

Kurfurstendamm to Potsdamer Platz

Terrain: Flat, wide shopping boulevards with massive crowd energy on the Ku'damm, slight undulations near Potsdamer Platz

Challenge: The Ku'damm crowd noise at km 30-33 arrives exactly when fatigue begins — the temptation to surge is strong

Tactic: Let the Ku'damm crowd carry you but do not accelerate beyond goal pace. Save the extra gear for the final 5km.

km 38–42.195

Leipziger Strasse to Brandenburg Gate

Terrain: Slight rise of 3-4m near Leipziger Strasse (km 39), then flat on Unter den Linden through the Gate

Challenge: The subtle climb near km 39 is called 'The Wall' — at 38km any uphill feels enormous. Many runners break here.

Tactic: Keep form tall, shorten stride slightly through the rise. Once you see the Brandenburg Gate ahead, open up. The final 800m through the Gate to the finish line is the most iconic stretch in marathon running.

Race-Specific Training

  • Practice extended tempo runs at goal marathon pace on flat terrain (15-20km) to build the specific pacing discipline Berlin demands — the course will not regulate your speed for you
  • Train for mental monotony: Berlin rewards metronomic running, not surging. Practice locking into a pace and holding it with zero variation for long intervals
  • Include at least one race simulation long run where you run the first half 5-10 sec/km slower than goal pace, then negative split — this is the ideal Berlin execution

Conditions & Environment

Altitude

Course sits at 34-40m throughout. No altitude concerns whatsoever.

Weather

Late September. Typical race-morning temps 10-15C (50-59F), near the physiological sweet spot. Warm years can push to 18-20C (64-68F) — monitor the forecast and adjust pace.

Sun & Wind

Morning sun can be in your eyes heading east on Karl-Marx-Allee. Wind is generally light in the city but can funnel down wider boulevards. Rarely a significant factor.

What to Wear

Minimal layers — singlet and shorts for most conditions. You will warm up fast. A throwaway layer for the start area in Tiergarten is useful for the 30-45 minute corral wait.

Pacing Strategy

SegmentPaceNote
km 0-125-10 sec/km slower than goal paceBank energy, not time. If Karl-Marx-Allee feels easy, you are doing it right.
km 12-25Goal paceSettle in. Flat terrain, metronomic rhythm. Take gel before km 24.
km 25-38Goal paceKu'damm energy will make this feel easier than it is. Stay disciplined.
km 38-42.195Goal pace or fasterThe payoff. Absorb the Leipziger Strasse rise, then let it rip through the Gate.

Race Day Tip

Berlin uses a time-based corral system with a very large field (45,000+). Seed yourself honestly based on recent race times — starting in a faster corral than your fitness justifies almost always leads to a blown second half. The S-Bahn to the Tiergarten start area gets extremely crowded on race morning; arrive 90+ minutes before your wave.
