Course Overview

One of the flattest marathon courses in Europe with total elevation gain under 10m and no point rising above 10m, starting and finishing at Islands Brygge. The course never forces you uphill, making it an excellent PB course. The defining feature is the harbour-side wind exposure — Copenhagen's coastal position means sustained headwinds of 15-25 km/h on the waterfront sections can make this pancake-flat course feel deceptively hard.

Key Segments

km 0–10

Nyhavn, Amalienborg & Langelinie

Terrain: Dead flat harbour-side roads through the city's most iconic sights, including Nyhavn, Amalienborg Palace, and The Little Mermaid

Challenge: The wide harbour-side roads feel effortless and the massive crowd energy at Nyhavn can pull you 10-15 sec/km ahead of plan without noticing.

Tactic: Discipline yourself by running to heart rate or perceived effort rather than pace. The Langelinie waterfront (km 8-10) can have a sustained headwind — draft behind others.

km 10–22

Osterbro & Norrebro

Terrain: Flat residential streets through Osterbro, then Norrebro, with scattered crowd support and quiet patches between intersections

Challenge: Crowd density thins compared to the city centre. Mental drift is the primary risk on these flat, quieter stretches.

Tactic: Have a mantra or focus cue ready for the quieter sections. Stay on pace and maintain rhythm through the half marathon mark.

km 22–32

Frederiksberg & Vesterbro

Terrain: Flat leafy boulevards through Frederiksberg, then through the vibrant Vesterbro district

Challenge: The thick Frederiksberg crowds and Vesterbro energy can tempt surges when you should be maintaining even effort.

Tactic: Use the crowd energy as a mental lift but do not increase pace. Take fuel at km 25 and 30. Stay steady.

km 32–42.195

Southern Harbour Return

Terrain: Open harbour-side roads along Kalvebod Brygge and Amager Strandpark, returning to Islands Brygge

Challenge: The loneliest stretch of the course — spectators thin out, the road opens up, and there is often a crosswind off the Oresund. This is where the race is won or lost.

Tactic: Focus on form: shoulders relaxed, hips forward, cadence steady. If you trained even pacing on flat terrain, the final 10km will reward that discipline.

Race-Specific Training

  • Practice running in coastal wind conditions — Copenhagen's harbour sections can have sustained 15-25 km/h headwinds, and learning to draft and adjust stride length is critical
  • Practice taking nutrition at race pace on flat terrain, since there are no natural slow-down points where gels are easier to take
  • Run your long runs with strict even or negative splits to build the discipline needed on a course that never provides terrain feedback to regulate your effort

Conditions & Environment

Altitude

Sea level (3-10m). No altitude concerns.

Weather

Mid-May. Typical race-morning temps 10-18C (50-64F). May sun can be strong by mid-race even if the morning feels cool.

Sun & Wind

Occasional sustained headwind of 15-25 km/h off the Oresund strait, particularly along Langelinie (km 8-10) and the southern harbour return (km 35-38). May sun is deceptively strong.

What to Wear

Dress lightly — even at 12C you will warm up quickly. Overdressing is the most common Copenhagen mistake. The morning feels cool but the May sun is strong by mid-race.

Pacing Strategy

SegmentPaceNote
km 0-10Goal pace or 3-5 sec/km slowerThe Nyhavn and Amalienborg crowds will pull you fast. Use heart rate or effort to stay disciplined.
km 10-22Goal paceQuieter residential sections. Maintain rhythm through the half marathon mark.
km 22-32Goal paceFrederiksberg and Vesterbro crowds. Use the energy but do not surge.
km 32-42.195Goal pace or fasterLonely harbour return. Focus on form. The reward for even pacing through the middle kilometres.

Race Day Tip

Carry your own gels to avoid congestion at aid station tables. The flat course has no natural slow-down points where taking nutrition is easier, so practice fuelling at race pace during your long runs.
