Course Overview

A flat loop course with only 50m of total elevation gain, but with one dramatic early exception: the Ambassador Bridge international crossing into Canada (km 2-5), which rises 30m and is the steepest section of the race. You return via the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel at km 8-9. The one thing that makes Detroit unique is being the only marathon in North America that crosses an international border — you run through two countries in the first 10km.

Key Segments

km 0–5

Ambassador Bridge Crossing

Terrain: Sharp climb from 180m to 210m over the Ambassador Bridge into Canada. Steepest section of the entire course. Descent into Windsor.

Challenge: The bridge climb is the steepest gradient on an otherwise flat course, and strong wind exposure on the bridge can be brutal. Adrenaline tempts aggressive starts.

Tactic: Run the bridge climb at controlled effort — do not burn matches in the first 5km. Tuck behind other runners in the wind. Save energy for the flat miles ahead.

km 5–10

Windsor & Tunnel Return

Terrain: Flat through Windsor waterfront (185-192m), then descent through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel back to Detroit. Tunnel is enclosed with limited ventilation.

Challenge: The tunnel is warm, stuffy, and has limited hydration. The downhill grade in the tunnel can stress quads if run carelessly.

Tactic: Run the tunnel descent with short strides to protect quads. Consider carrying a handheld through the tunnel since aid is limited. Settle into rhythm once back in Detroit.

km 10–33

Detroit Neighborhoods

Terrain: Flat, 155-181m. Long stretch through Mexicantown, Corktown, midtown, Indian Village, and Jefferson Avenue. Pancake flat.

Challenge: Sparse crowds in some neighborhoods (Indian Village, east Detroit) make these mentally tough miles. No terrain variation to break up the monotony.

Tactic: Lock into goal pace. Break into 5km mental segments. Use neighborhood transitions as mental waypoints. Stay on top of fueling.

km 33–42.195

Belle Isle & Riverfront Finish

Terrain: Flat, 176-180m. Belle Isle loop via MacArthur Bridge, then along the Detroit Riverwalk back to Fort Street.

Challenge: Belle Isle is beautiful but isolated. The bridge crossings add minor effort. The final 5km riverfront is flat but fatigue is real.

Tactic: Maintain cadence on Belle Isle. The crowd builds once you're back on the Riverwalk. The last 5km are pancake flat — perfect for a strong close.

Race-Specific Training

  • Practice uphill running at controlled effort followed by an immediate transition to flat running — the Ambassador Bridge climb and flat post-tunnel miles demand this gear shift
  • Include mental resilience training in long runs: 15-20km flat sections with minimal stimulation to simulate the quiet Detroit neighborhoods in the middle miles
  • Train in windy conditions when possible — the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit riverfront sections have sustained crosswinds

Conditions & Environment

Altitude

Course at 155-210m (the bridge being the high point). No altitude concerns.

Weather

Mid-October. Typical race-morning temps 5-14°C (41-57°F). Can range from near-freezing to 18°C (64°F). October weather in Detroit is highly variable.

Sun & Wind

Ambassador Bridge is fully exposed to wind — crosswinds can be strong. Detroit riverfront also wind-exposed. Morning sun on east-facing stretches.

What to Wear

Prepare for a wide temperature range. Throwaway layers for the start. Arm sleeves and gloves for cold years. Singlet and shorts for mild years.

Pacing Strategy

Race Day Tip

You cross an international border on this course — carry your passport or enhanced ID on race day. Race organizers require it for the Ambassador Bridge crossing into Canada. Forget your ID and you cannot run the full marathon course.
