Course Overview

An almost perfectly flat loop course with under 15m of total elevation change, connecting all four Walt Disney World theme parks. The 5:00 AM start, Florida humidity, and the entertainment distractions make this a uniquely challenging race despite the flat terrain.

Key Segments

km 0–17

EPCOT and Magic Kingdom

Terrain: Dead flat resort roads and theme park paths. Wide backstage roads narrow inside the parks

Challenge: The pre-dawn darkness, crowded park entries, and character photo-op congestion can break your rhythm. Main Street U.S.A. bottleneck at km 14.5

Tactic: Commit to your race strategy before the start: racing or experience, not both. Position toward the front of your corral to avoid bottlenecks. Settle into goal pace early.

km 17–26

World Drive to Animal Kingdom

Terrain: Long, wide backstage roads with minimal scenery. Completely flat

Challenge: The 8km stretch between Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom is mentally tedious with thin crowd support. This is where the race gets lonely

Tactic: Prepare mental strategies for this quiet section — podcasts of favorite mantras, counting to aid stations. Take on fuel consistently. Do not let boredom slow you down.

km 26–35

Animal Kingdom to Hollywood Studios

Terrain: Flat resort roads through Animal Kingdom and ESPN Wide World of Sports area into Hollywood Studios

Challenge: The heat and humidity build as the sun rises. Fatigue compounds the mental challenge of more backstage road sections

Tactic: Stay disciplined with hydration — take fluids at every aid station. The park entries provide morale boosts; use them to reset mentally.

km 35–42.195

Hollywood Studios to EPCOT Finish

Terrain: Flat through Hollywood Studios, along BoardWalk, and back into EPCOT for the final lap

Challenge: Legs are tired and the heat peaks. The festive finish through EPCOT's World Showcase can tempt you to coast

Tactic: The crowds build dramatically from km 38. Use the energy. Push through the final World Showcase lap — the finish is just ahead.

Race-Specific Training

  • Train with 4:00-5:00 AM long runs to acclimate your body to performing at race-hour — the 5 AM start is the biggest performance variable on this course
  • Practice sustained flat running with long tempo efforts of 15-20km at marathon pace on flat terrain, since there are zero hills to break up the monotony
  • Run at least two long runs in high-humidity conditions to practice sweat management and hydration strategy, even if you have to use extra layers to simulate it

Conditions & Environment

Altitude

Effectively sea level throughout. Start at 28m, finish at 28m. No elevation concerns.

Weather

Early January. Typical temps 10-20°C (50-68°F) at the start, rising to 18-25°C (64-77°F) by finish. Florida humidity of 70-90% makes it feel significantly warmer.

Sun & Wind

First 2-3 hours in complete darkness. Sun rises around km 20-25 depending on pace. Minimal wind protection on open resort roads. Increasing sun exposure through the final 15km.

What to Wear

Light, moisture-wicking singlet and shorts. Arm sleeves are ideal for the cool dark start — discard as temps rise. Avoid overdressing at the start.

Pacing Strategy

SegmentPaceNote
km 0-17Goal paceSettle in early. Avoid getting caught up in park excitement or photo-op stops if racing.
km 17-26Goal paceThe boring stretch. Stay disciplined, stay on pace, and fuel consistently.
km 26-35Goal pace, monitor effort as heat risesHumidity builds. If heart rate spikes, slightly ease pace. Take water at every station.
km 35-42.195Goal pace or push if ableThe crowds return at EPCOT. Use the festive energy to hold or build pace through the finish.

Race Day Tip

The corrals open extremely early and you will stand for 60-90 minutes before your wave starts. Bring throwaway warm clothes for the wait, eat breakfast by 3:30 AM, and use the restrooms before entering the corral — the in-corral porta-potty lines are enormous. Also, decide before race morning: are you racing or experiencing? Trying to do both guarantees frustration.
