Course Overview

One of the flattest marathon courses in the northeastern United States, routing runners through Presque Isle State Park's Lake Erie peninsula and along Erie's bayfront with just 20m of total elevation change. The loop course on the peninsula means you will face both headwind and tailwind sections regardless of prevailing conditions, making wind management the race's defining tactical challenge.

Key Segments

km 0–9

Bayfront to Presque Isle North Shore

Terrain: Flat peninsula roads, 178-185m elevation, fully exposed Lake Erie shoreline

Challenge: The north shore is the most wind-exposed section — lake breezes strengthen through the morning and can create significant headwind

Tactic: Settle into goal pace, draft behind other runners when heading into wind. Do not fight the wind — maintain effort, not pace.

km 9–21.1

Peninsula Tip and South Bay Return

Terrain: Flat, 177-185m, peninsula loop with panoramic lake views. South bay side is typically more sheltered.

Challenge: The turnaround at the peninsula tip is psychologically significant — after 9km of exposed running, the sheltered bay side can tempt surging

Tactic: Use the sheltered bay side to recover from any headwind effort, not to accelerate. Stay even on effort through halfway.

km 21.1–33

Erie Bayfront and Downtown

Terrain: Flat city streets and bayfront paths, 178-185m elevation, mixed sun exposure

Challenge: Transition from scenic peninsula to urban streets can feel monotonous. Humidity off the lake drives sweat rate higher than expected.

Tactic: Break into 5km mental segments. Maintain fueling every 5-6km. The bayfront crowds provide energy — absorb it.

km 33–42.195

Final Approach to Presque Isle Finish

Terrain: Flat residential and bayfront roads returning to Presque Isle, 178-181m elevation

Challenge: Cumulative flat-running fatigue with no terrain relief, plus potential morning fog reducing visibility and creating disorienting conditions

Tactic: Process goals every 3km — focus on form (cadence, arm carriage, relaxed hands). If you held back early, begin pressing from km 37.

Race-Specific Training

  • Train the bulk of long runs on flat terrain to condition legs for the repetitive neuromuscular demand of relentless flat running at marathon effort
  • Practice running in variable wind — a breezy day is training gold for learning relaxed form and effort management into headwinds
  • Include regular calf raises, single-leg balance work, and plantar fascia exercises — the flat, hard surface without ascent/descent variety builds cumulative lower-leg fatigue

Conditions & Environment

Altitude

Entirely at 177-185m above sea level. No altitude concerns.

Weather

September race. Typical temperatures 12-22°C (54-72°F). Lake Erie generates its own microclimate with higher humidity than inland areas even at moderate temperatures.

Sun & Wind

Onshore lake breezes strengthen through the morning as land heats. North shore of the peninsula is most exposed. Morning fog off Lake Erie is common, reducing visibility. Sun exposure increases through the race.

What to Wear

Layers for the start — temperature can be 5-7°C cooler at the early start than at midday finish. Light disposable layer for the first mile. Wear a cap or visor for sun protection if fog clears.

Pacing Strategy

SegmentPaceNote
km 0-9Goal pace (effort-based if headwind)North shore exposure — maintain effort, not pace, if heading into wind. Draft when possible.
km 9-21.1Goal paceSheltered bay side. Settle into rhythm. Do not surge because the wind eased.
km 21.1-33Goal paceUrban bayfront. Stay mentally engaged through the transition from peninsula scenery to city streets.
km 33-42.195Goal pace or fasterFlat finish rewards patience. Begin pressing from km 37 if legs feel good.

Race Day Tip

Lake Erie humidity means your sweat rate will be higher than you expect even at moderate temperatures. Do not rely on thirst alone — develop a proactive hydration plan and take fluids at every aid station from the start, regardless of how comfortable you feel.
