Course Map & Elevation
Course Overview
Exceptionally flat city loop with only 15m of total elevation gain and no hill exceeding a 1% grade, starting and finishing near the Messe Hamburg. One of Germany's largest and fastest spring marathons. The defining feature is the Elbe River waterfront exposure early in the race — Hamburg's maritime climate can deliver brisk headwinds off the river that make the flat course feel deceptively hard.
Key Segments
St. Pauli to Elbe Waterfront
Terrain: Gentle drop from 10m to 3m heading south through St. Pauli toward the Elbe River, then exposed waterfront roads
Challenge: The subtle downhill tempts a fast start, and the Elbe waterfront (km 5-8) is exposed to brisk April headwinds off the river.
Tactic: Treat km 1-5 as warm-up. On the waterfront, tuck behind other runners and do not fight the wind alone — you will recover the time on sheltered streets.
HafenCity, Speicherstadt & Alster Lakes
Terrain: Flat roads through the warehouse district with short cobblestone transitions, then tree-lined paths around the Outer Alster lake
Challenge: Short cobblestone patches near canal bridges in Speicherstadt require attention. The Alster section is the emotional heart of the race with the largest crowds.
Tactic: Shorten stride through cobblestone sections. Use the Alster crowd energy to lock in your rhythm through the halfway point. Do not surge.
Eimsbuttel & Winterhude
Terrain: Flat residential streets with the course's only notable rise near Stadtpark (km 30, gaining ~4-5m over 800m)
Challenge: Crowd support thins in the residential sections. This is the mental crux of the race. The slight Stadtpark rise is the closest thing to a hill.
Tactic: Stay focused on even splits. Do not surge when the crowd returns near km 32. Keep cadence steady through the Stadtpark rise.
Schanzenviertel Return to Messe
Terrain: Dead flat roads back through St. Pauli with building crowd noise. The last 2km are straight and flat.
Challenge: Fatigue on a flat course with no terrain variation. The temptation to push too early in the final stretch.
Tactic: The dead-flat final 2km are where disciplined pacing through the middle kilometres pays off. Let the Schanzenviertel crowd noise carry you.
Race-Specific Training
- •Practice running in brisk headwinds — Hamburg's maritime climate regularly delivers 15-25 km/h winds off the Elbe, and learning to draft efficiently is critical for the exposed waterfront sections
- •Include short cobblestone running in training to prepare for the Speicherstadt warehouse district transitions near canal bridges
- •Focus on pace discipline and even-split long runs — on a course this flat, the only thing that can slow you is going out too fast
Conditions & Environment
Altitude
Sea level (2-20m). No altitude concerns.
Weather
Late April. Typical race temps 8-16C (46-61F). Hamburg's maritime climate means conditions shift quickly — rain, wind, and brief sunshine within the same morning are common.
Sun & Wind
Brisk headwind off the Elbe River possible on the waterfront (km 5-8). The Alster Lake section is more sheltered. Check forecast 48 hours out.
What to Wear
Have a throwaway layer ready for the start corral. Dress for the warmer half of the forecast — you will heat up. Well-draining shoes in case of rain.
Pacing Strategy
| Segment | Pace | Note |
|---|---|---|
| km 0-8 | Goal pace or 3-5 sec/km slower | Warm up through St. Pauli. Draft on the exposed Elbe waterfront. |
| km 8-21 | Goal pace | Speicherstadt and Alster. Lock in rhythm. Short stride on cobblestones. |
| km 22-33 | Goal pace | Quiet residential section. Maintain focus. Steady through Stadtpark rise. |
| km 33-42.195 | Goal pace or faster | Flat return to Messe. The payoff for middle-kilometre discipline. Dead-flat final 2km. |
Race Day Tip
Hamburg's field of ~15,000 marathon runners is large enough for good pacing groups but small enough to avoid extreme congestion. Seed yourself into the correct starting wave based on your predicted finish time to avoid weaving in the first few kilometres.
