Course Overview

A rolling, point-to-point course crossing two continents with approximately 100m of total elevation gain, starting on the Asian side at 72m and finishing at 12m in the historic Sultanahmet district. The defining feature is the Bosphorus Bridge crossing — the only marathon in the world where you run from Asia to Europe — combined with punishing late-race hills through the Ottoman old city.

Key Segments

km 0–8

Asian Descent & Bosphorus Bridge

Terrain: Sharp descent from 72m to sea level (12m), then up and over the 15th July Martyrs Bridge peaking at ~55m (km 8-9)

Challenge: The steep early downhill hammers your quads, and the exposed bridge crossing has unpredictable crosswinds off the Bosphorus strait

Tactic: Shorten stride on the descent to protect your quads. On the bridge, stay centered, keep your cadence high, and do not fight the crosswind — adjust your lean and hold effort steady.

km 8–20

European Coastal & Fatih Hills

Terrain: Rolling terrain along the Bosphorus shore then climbing into the Fatih district ridgelines, with hills between km 15-18 gaining 30-40m

Challenge: The hills through Fatih are the first significant climbing after the bridge descent. The narrow old-city streets can feel congested.

Tactic: Run the coastal stretch at goal pace. On the Fatih hills, shorten stride and run by effort. Do not surge — save energy for the harder hills after km 24.

km 20–37

Golden Horn & Old City Hills

Terrain: Undulating terrain along the Golden Horn then repeated climbs through the historic peninsula ridgelines (km 24-27 gaining ~50m, km 33-37 gaining ~60m)

Challenge: The constant undulations between km 24-37 are the decisive section. Cumulative fatigue from the early descent plus sustained hills breaks most runners here.

Tactic: Shorten stride on every uphill, increase cadence. Accept slower splits. Run by effort, not pace. Take fuel at every opportunity from km 20 onward.

km 37–42.195

Sultanahmet Descent to Finish

Terrain: Descent from 70m through the historic Sultanahmet district to the finish at 12m near the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia

Challenge: One final climb near km 37 before the descent. Tired legs on cobblestone and uneven surfaces near the historic sites.

Tactic: Crest the final hill knowing the hardest work is done. Let the spectacular Sultanahmet setting carry you to the finish.

Race-Specific Training

  • Incorporate hill repeats of 200-400m at 5-8% grade at least twice per week to prepare for the repeated climbs through the old city ridgelines
  • Practice running in crosswinds — the Bosphorus Bridge crossing is exposed and unpredictable, unlike any other section of a road marathon
  • Do long runs that start with a steep 3-5km descent followed by rolling hills to simulate the Asian side drop then European hills sequence

Conditions & Environment

Altitude

Start at 72m, finish at 12m. Bridge crossing peaks at ~55m. No altitude concerns.

Weather

November. Typical race temps 8-16C (46-61F) with potential rain. Cool and damp conditions are common.

Sun & Wind

The Bosphorus Bridge is exposed to crosswinds off the strait. Coastal sections along the European side can be windy. Afternoon sun on the historic peninsula.

What to Wear

Long sleeves or arm sleeves for the cool start and exposed bridge. Light and breathable for when conditions warm up in the old city.

Pacing Strategy

SegmentPaceNote
km 0-85-10 sec/km slower than goal paceDescend carefully, cross the bridge conservatively. Protect your quads for the hills ahead.
km 8-20Goal pace on flats, effort-based on hillsSettle in along the coast, run the Fatih hills by effort.
km 20-37Effort-based, 10-20 sec/km slower on hillsThe decisive section. Run by effort through the old city climbs. Fuel aggressively.
km 37-42.195Goal pace or faster on descentRelease stored energy on the descent into Sultanahmet. The Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia mark the finish.

Race Day Tip

The start on the Asian side requires an early-morning shuttle. The staging area is exposed and November mornings are cold — bring warm throwaway clothes. The narrow old-city streets after km 30 can be congested; stay on the inside of turns to maintain your line.
