Course Overview

A flat waterfront loop course sitting between 3-15m above sea level, running along the Hudson River with the Manhattan skyline as a near-constant backdrop. The course loops through Liberty State Park, Exchange Place, Newport, and Lincoln Park before returning to the finish. What makes Jersey City unique is the combination of one of the flattest urban marathon profiles in the US with notoriously windy spring conditions along the exposed Hudson River waterfront.

Key Segments

km 0–9

Liberty State Park

Terrain: Flat paved park paths and waterfront, 3-6m elevation, with open views of Manhattan skyline and Statue of Liberty

Challenge: The beautiful scenery and cool April morning create an illusion of ease that leads to over-racing; exposed park paths catch northerly spring winds

Tactic: Start controlled. Use the skyline as a distraction, not a pace accelerator. Tuck behind other runners if wind is coming from the north.

km 9–21

Exchange Place to Lincoln Park

Terrain: Flat urban roads rising gently to 13-15m through Lincoln Park — the course high point. Mixed surfaces in park sections with slightly softer ground

Challenge: Lincoln Park's gentle rise feels more significant after 18+ km than elevation numbers suggest; mixed surfaces demand adaptation

Tactic: Lock into goal pace through Exchange Place. Expect the Lincoln Park rise — do not push on it. Use the park's shelter from wind to recover.

km 21–33.5

Second Waterfront Pass

Terrain: Flat waterfront return, 3-8m elevation, passing through Liberty State Park a second time with Statue of Liberty views

Challenge: Seeing the finish area before you are done is psychologically tricky — some find it motivating, others demoralizing. Wind exposure returns on the waterfront.

Tactic: Break this section into 3km chunks. The course is a loop — you pass Exchange Place twice, so mentally prepare for the déjà vu. Stay focused on form.

km 33.5–42.195

Final Waterfront to Finish

Terrain: Flat park paths and waterfront, 3m elevation, returning to Liberty State Park festival grounds

Challenge: Accumulated fatigue on unrelenting flat terrain with no downhill assistance

Tactic: Exchange Place second pass brings strong crowd support — use it. The final kilometres through Liberty State Park are sheltered. Push if you were patient through the middle.

Race-Specific Training

  • Practice long runs in wind — the Hudson River waterfront is notoriously gusty in April, with northerly and northwesterly gusts that can sap 10-15 sec/km if you fight them upright
  • Include mixed-surface running in training (paved paths, crushed gravel, softer park ground) to prepare for the Lincoln Park sections where footing changes subtly
  • Run at least two flat, solo long runs of 25-30km without external cues (no pacers, no crowds) to build the mental discipline for the monotonous waterfront sections between km 18-30

Conditions & Environment

Altitude

Sea level at 3-15m. No altitude concerns.

Weather

Mid-to-late April. Morning temps 8-14C (46-57F), potentially climbing to 18C (64F) for back-of-pack runners. Conditions are highly variable — cool and breezy to warm and calm.

Sun & Wind

Spring northerly and northwesterly gusts are common along the exposed Hudson waterfront. Sun exposure increases through the morning. Liberty State Park offers some shelter in interior sections.

What to Wear

Arm sleeves or a light long-sleeve that can be stripped to a singlet. Layering awareness is critical — April mornings can feel brisk at the start but warm significantly by halfway.

Pacing Strategy

SegmentPaceNote
km 0-9Goal pace — no fasterResist the scenic Liberty State Park opener. Cool April mornings feel deceptively easy. Hold back.
km 9-21Goal pace, even effort through Lincoln Park riseThe gentle Lincoln Park rise is the highest point. Do not push on it. Use sheltered sections to settle into rhythm.
km 21-33.5Goal pace, effort-basedSecond waterfront pass. Break into short segments. Seeing the finish area early is normal — stay present.
km 33.5-42.195Goal pace or slight negative splitExchange Place crowd support returns. The flat course makes even splits achievable — over-racing the first half is the most common mistake.

Race Day Tip

Arrive early and familiarize yourself with the Liberty State Park start area — the park is large and the walk from parking can be longer than expected. The Manhattan skyline view at sunrise is one of the great urban marathon backdrops anywhere in the world, so take a moment to appreciate it before the gun.
