Course Overview
A fast, net-downhill point-to-point course dropping approximately 300m from the Tonto National Forest foothills (700m) to downtown Mesa (399m), with 60m of total climbing. The sustained descent through Sonoran Desert terrain makes this one of the most significant elevation losses of any major US marathon. Note: the net drop exceeds 1m/km, so times are not Boston Qualifier eligible.

Tonto Foothills Descent
Terrain: Steady downhill from 700m to 583m through open Sonoran Desert, average grade ~1.2%

Salt River Community
Terrain: Gradual descent from 583m to 458m through wide-open flat desert roads with minimal shade
Challenge: Full sun exposure with no wind protection; the flatter terrain after the steep descent tempts a pace spike your legs cannot sustain
Tactic: Settle into goal pace. Drink to schedule at every aid station — the dry desert air masks sweat loss. Do not surge.
Mesa City Grid
Terrain: Nearly flat urban boulevards through central Mesa, 458m to 412m, gentle 0.4% grade
Challenge: Quads are taxed from 25km of downhill pounding; any early excess comes due on this section
Tactic: Maintain goal pace by effort, not by watch. Crowd support increases through central Mesa — channel energy into form, not surging.
Downtown Mesa Finish
Terrain: Flat to barely descending through downtown Mesa, 412m to 399m
Challenge: Eccentric fatigue peaks here; even flat ground feels hard after 36km of downhill
Tactic: Stay tall, drive arms, and use the crowd. The finish line is visible from far away — start your kick at km 40.
Race-Specific Training
- •Build downhill-specific quad strength with treadmill descent runs at 2-4% negative grade for 20-60 minutes, progressing over 12 weeks
- •Include at least two long runs with 200-400m of sustained downhill to condition quads for eccentric loading at race pace
