Course Overview

A flat loop course at approximately 2,240m above sea level with only 50m of total elevation gain, starting and finishing at the Angel of Independence on Paseo de la Reforma. km 10–21

Polanco and Southward Transit

Terrain: Gradual descent from 2258m to 2222m through affluent Polanco and residential districts, wide flat streets

Challenge: Pacing discipline is decisive here — many runners feel settled and strong, but altitude fatigue has not yet peaked. Resisting the urge to surge is critical.

Tactic: Maintain dead-even splits at altitude-adjusted pace. Drink 150-200ml at every aid station — the dry high-altitude air causes increased respiratory water loss.

km 21–35

UNAM and Coyoacan

Terrain: Gently rolling through southern Mexico City, rising from 2222m to 2260m then descending to 2246m through UNAM campus and Coyoacan

Challenge: The combined effects of altitude fatigue, glycogen depletion, and the course's highest points arrive together between km 30-32 at ~2260m

Tactic: Shorten stride, keep cadence above 170spm. Take carbohydrates at every gel station — reduced oxygen makes carbohydrate metabolism relatively more important than fat metabolism at altitude.

km 35–42.195

Return to Angel of Independence

Terrain: Slightly net downhill from 2246m to 2240m, returning north through Colonia del Valle to Paseo de la Reforma

Challenge: At altitude and late in a marathon, even gentle downhills stress fatigued quads. The temptation to open stride recklessly risks accelerating muscular breakdown.

Tactic: Controlled turnover, not bounding strides. The net downhill is a gift — use it with discipline. The crowd on Reforma will carry you to the Angel.

Race-Specific Training

  • If possible, use altitude tents or altitude training camps at 2000-2500m simulated elevation for 4-6 weeks before the race to improve red blood cell production
  • Adjust all goal-pace training runs upward by 4-6% to simulate the aerobic cost of racing at 2,240m — if your sea-level pace is 5:00/km, train at 5:12-5:18/km
