Course Overview
A point-to-point course running southward from Grafton to Veterans Park in downtown Milwaukee, dropping ~42m net from 218m to 176m, with 30m of total climbing. The rolling nature means multiple short climbs and descents rather than a smooth gradient. The one thing that makes this race unique is the Lake Michigan lakefront finish — spectacular but fully exposed to easterly lake breezes that arrive precisely when legs are most fatigued.
Key Segments
Grafton to Fox Point — Northern Suburbs
Terrain: Net descent from 218m to 196m with rolling hills through Thiensville, Mequon, and Fox Point. Several short climbs (km 6-8 gaining ~19m) and descents.
Challenge: Pleasant suburban streets tempt banking time early; the rolling hills from km 6-12 demand disciplined pacing
Tactic: Run by effort, not pace. The rollers are deceptive — tempo on undulating terrain is the target. Do not surge on the descents.
Whitefish Bay to Shorewood
Terrain: Continued rolling terrain from 196m to 186m through the north shore neighborhoods, with a second set of rollers (km 14-16 gaining ~18m)
Challenge: The most pronounced undulations of the course; runners who went out hard through the northern suburbs begin to struggle here
Tactic: Settle into goal pace. Dense urban neighborhoods bring crowd support through Shorewood. Use the energy to maintain form, not to surge.
Milwaukee North Shore — Inland Stretch
Terrain: Gentle rolling from 186m descending to 203m before sweeping down toward the lakefront at 197m. Course navigates through Bradford Beach and North Point.
Challenge: The middle third grinds — rollers continue without the excitement of the start or the lakefront finish
Tactic: Stay steady. This is where even-split discipline matters most. Take gel by km 28-30 to fuel the final lakefront push.
Lincoln Memorial Drive — Lakefront Finish
Terrain: Descent from 197m to 176m along Lincoln Memorial Drive and the lakefront parkway, passing McKinley Beach and Summerfest grounds
Challenge: The most exposed section — easterly lake breezes (Lake Michigan headwind) hit when legs are most fatigued
Tactic: Tuck behind other runners if headwind. The Milwaukee skyline and Lake Michigan are ahead — use the visual to push through. Finish strong into Veterans Park.
Race-Specific Training
- •Train regularly on rolling terrain and practice running by effort rather than by pace — tempo runs on undulating courses are the best preparation for Milwaukee's profile
- •Include wind-training runs, particularly into headwinds, to prepare for the exposed lakefront finish where Lake Michigan breezes can add significant resistance
- •Practice negative-split long runs to build the discipline for saving your strongest running for the final lakefront stretch
Conditions & Environment
Altitude
Start at 218m, finish at 176m. No altitude concerns.
Weather
October race. Typical temps 5-15C (41-59F). Lake Michigan moderates temperatures but conditions can change rapidly during the 3-5 hour race window.
Sun & Wind
Strong easterly lake breezes are common and hit hardest on the exposed lakefront sections (km 34-42). The northern suburban sections are more sheltered by trees and buildings.
What to Wear
Throwaway layer strongly recommended at the Grafton start. Race with gloves and arm warmers that can be shed. Have a plan for both warm and cool scenarios.
Pacing Strategy
| Segment | Pace | Note |
|---|---|---|
| km 0-12 | 5-8 sec/km slower than goal pace | Rolling northern suburbs. Run by effort on the undulations. Do not bank time on descents. |
| km 12-22 | Goal pace | North shore neighborhoods. Crowd support builds through Shorewood. Maintain steady effort through rollers. |
| km 22-34 | Goal pace | Grinding middle section. Stay disciplined. Fuel up by km 28-30 for the lakefront push. |
| km 34-42.195 | Goal pace or faster | Lakefront finish. If headwind, tuck and push. The skyline view and Veterans Park finish are worth every ounce of patience. |
Race Day Tip
The lakefront headwind off Lake Michigan (km 34-42) is the course's defining challenge. Experienced runners tuck behind others during this stretch to conserve 10-15 seconds per kilometer. If the forecast shows easterly wind above 15 km/h, mentally budget for a harder final 8km and save accordingly.
