Course Overview
A net-downhill point-to-point course dropping ~152m from the start near Frenchtown (1052m) to downtown Missoula (900m), with 100m of total climbing. The course follows the scenic Clark Fork River corridor east through the Bitterroot Valley. This is one of the premier Boston Qualifier races in the Mountain West, combining genuine downhill speed with spectacular mountain scenery.
Key Segments
Frenchtown to 10K — Steepest Descent
Terrain: Consistent downhill from 1052m to 1010m through rural Clark Fork River valley, average grade ~0.4%
Challenge: The steepest section of descent tempts aggressive early splits; heart rate runs artificially low on the downhill, giving a false sense of ease
Tactic: Run by heart rate or power zones, not feel. Target 5-10 sec/km slower than goal pace. Let gravity carry you without pounding.
Clark Fork Valley — Mid-Race Corridor
Terrain: Gentle sustained descent from 1010m to 938m along the river corridor, mostly paved roads with minimal turns
Challenge: Isolated from crowd support through farm country; the steady grade makes it easy to drift faster than planned without realizing
Tactic: Settle into goal pace. This is rhythm territory — lock in breathing, take gels by km 22-24. Do not skip aid stations even if comfortable.
Entering Missoula Metro
Terrain: Course shelters through suburban Missoula, gradual descent from 938m to 912m
Challenge: Cumulative quad fatigue from 28km of downhill begins to manifest; the course feels flatter and momentum from gravity fades
Tactic: Maintain effort level — accept that pace may slow slightly as the grade levels off. Crowd support builds; use it for form, not surging.
Clark Fork Riverfront Finish
Terrain: Flat riverfront trail and city streets from 912m to 900m — essentially no gradient assistance
Challenge: Psychologically difficult after relying on downhill grade for 36km; this is where under-trained runners fade badly
Tactic: This is where patient runners cash in. Open your stride, use the downtown crowds, and push to the finish at Caras Park.
Race-Specific Training
- •Incorporate dedicated downhill long runs on routes with 100-200m of net descent, practicing goal pace on the decline to calibrate appropriate effort
- •Run the final third of at least three long runs at or faster than goal pace on flat terrain to simulate the momentum loss when the Missoula course flattens
- •Do several warm-weather long runs to practice hydration strategy, as the dry high-altitude air accelerates dehydration without strong heat sensation
Conditions & Environment
Altitude
Start at 1052m, finish at 900m. Runners from sea level will notice modestly reduced aerobic capacity. Arrive 3-4 days early to acclimatize, or within 24 hours to avoid onset of altitude effects.
Weather
July race. Morning start temps 12-16C (54-61F), rising to 22-30C (72-86F) by mid-morning. Dry conditions throughout.
Sun & Wind
Low humidity accelerates sweat evaporation and masks fluid loss. The valley corridor is generally sheltered from strong wind but exposed to direct sun with minimal shade.
What to Wear
Light singlet and shorts. Consider a thin throwaway layer for the cool morning start near Frenchtown. Sunscreen and a cap are essential for the exposed valley miles.
Pacing Strategy
| Segment | Pace | Note |
|---|---|---|
| km 0-10 | 5-10 sec/km slower than goal pace | Steepest descent — bank energy, not time. HR will read low; do not trust perceived effort. |
| km 10-28 | Goal pace | Lock into rhythm through the valley. Take final gel by km 22-24 before the terrain levels off. |
| km 28-36 | Goal pace (effort-based) | Grade fades through Missoula suburbs. Accept slightly slower splits if effort is honest. |
| km 36-42.195 | Goal pace or faster | Flat riverfront finish — the payoff for disciplined early running. Crowd carries you through Caras Park. |
Race Day Tip
Do not skip aid stations in the early cool miles when you feel comfortable — staying ahead of dehydration at altitude is far easier than recovering from it. The dry mountain air can cost you 30+ minutes in the final 10km if you fall behind on fluids.
