Course Overview
A net-downhill point-to-point course dropping ~60m from Schenectady (100m) to Albany (40m), with 40m of total climbing spread across a sustained, rolling descent. One of the premier Boston Qualifier courses in the northeastern US, combining gentle net-downhill terrain, ideal October temperatures, and organized pace groups from 3:00 to 4:30. The course follows the Mohawk River valley before transitioning to the Hudson River corridor into Albany.
Key Segments
Schenectady to Erie Canalway
Terrain: Urban Schenectady streets transitioning to riverside path, gentle descent from 100m to 85m
Challenge: The gradual downhill encourages faster-than-intended pacing; eccentric quad loading begins accumulating silently
Tactic: Run by heart rate or power, not perceived effort. Effort feels easier than pace suggests on the descent — target 5-8 sec/km conservative.
Erie Canalway Trail — Mohawk River Corridor
Terrain: Scenic paved towpath along the historic Erie Canal route, gentle sustained descent from 85m to 67m, peak fall foliage
Challenge: Most isolated section of the course with minimal crowd support; mental drift and pace creep are the biggest risks
Tactic: Settle into goal pace with an internal pacing strategy. HR/power targets are more reliable than crowd cues here. Take gel by km 20.
Cohoes to Hudson River Transition
Terrain: Course transitions from Mohawk to Hudson River, passing Cohoes Falls and Waterford. Descent from 67m to 51m with minor rollers.
Challenge: Wind funneling up the Hudson valley can add 15-20 sec/km to perceived effort; this is where BQ attempts are won or lost
Tactic: Check wind forecast 48 hours before race. If southerly headwind, tuck behind other runners and shorten stride. Save a reserve for the final push.
Hudson River into Albany
Terrain: Hudson riverfront parkland and Albany city streets, gentle descent from 51m to 40m
Challenge: Cumulative quad fatigue from 33km of downhill meets potential headwind exposure; the most exposed section of the course
Tactic: Crowd support builds through Corning Preserve and downtown Albany. Push through with the energy — this is where disciplined runners pass faders.
Race-Specific Training
- •Incorporate 4-6 dedicated downhill training runs on 1-3% grades sustained for 5-10km in the 8 weeks before the race to condition quads for eccentric stress
- •Practice running at goal pace on descents to calibrate effort — your heart rate will read low on the downhill and give a false sense of ease
- •Train in variable wind conditions and practice relaxing into headwinds, as the Hudson valley funnels breezes that can hit hard in the final 10km
Conditions & Environment
Altitude
Start at 100m, finish at 40m. No altitude concerns.
Weather
October race. Typical temps 5-15C (41-59F), usually with low humidity. Near-ideal marathon conditions. Mornings can dip below 5C (41F) at the Schenectady start.
Sun & Wind
The Mohawk-Hudson valley can funnel southerly or southwesterly wind into the final 10km. Fall foliage provides some shelter on the Canalway Trail. Moderate sun exposure.
What to Wear
Throwaway layers essential for the cold Schenectady start. Race in singlet and shorts with arm warmers you can shed. Gloves recommended for early miles.
Pacing Strategy
| Segment | Pace | Note |
|---|---|---|
| km 0-10 | 5-8 sec/km slower than goal pace | Gentle downhill through Schenectady. Effort will feel easy — trust the plan, not the feel. |
| km 10-22 | Goal pace | Rhythm section on the Erie Canalway. Beautiful fall scenery but minimal crowd support — stay internal. |
| km 22-33 | Goal pace (adjust for wind) | Hudson transition. If headwind, accept 5-10 sec/km slower and stay effort-based. |
| km 33-42.195 | Goal pace or faster | Albany finish. Crowd energy builds through Corning Preserve and downtown — this is where patient runners BQ. |
Race Day Tip
Take the shuttle from Albany to Schenectady early — lines grow quickly close to the gun. The Canalway Trail section (km 8-22) has no crowd support, so develop a strong internal pacing plan rather than relying on spectator energy. Pace groups are available and well-run; consider joining one for BQ attempts.
