Course Overview

A flat coastal loop course sitting almost entirely between 2-20m above sea level, with the only meaningful elevation changes coming from flyover bridges around km 10-13 and km 33-37. The course starts and finishes near CST (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) and includes a dramatic crossing of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The one thing that makes Mumbai unique is the extreme combination of heat (18-30C) and coastal humidity (70-85%) at the early 5:40am start — this is a hot-weather marathon that demands heat-adapted preparation.

Key Segments

km 0–9

CST to Marine Drive & Nariman Point

Terrain: Flat coastal running at 3-6m along Marine Drive (Queen's Necklace) to Nariman Point and back north past Haji Ali

Challenge: The flat road and sea breeze mask the heat and humidity — your heart rate is 10-15 bpm higher than the same pace in cool conditions

Tactic: Run by effort or heart rate, not GPS pace. The crowd noise and the stunning Marine Drive seafront tempt aggressive pacing — resist completely.

km 9–21

Worli Flyover & Sea Link Crossing

Terrain: The Worli flyover (km 10-13) provides the main elevation with ~15-20m rise, then the exposed Bandra-Worli Sea Link at km 20

Challenge: The Sea Link is exposed to sea winds at the halfway mark, and the flyover is the only real climb on an otherwise flat course

Tactic: Run the flyover on effort, not pace. Stay relaxed crossing the Sea Link — wind exposure here is variable. Take fluids at every station from km 5.

km 21–34

Bandra Turnaround & Southbound Return

Terrain: Northern turnaround in Bandra then southbound return through Worli and along the coast. Rising sun and warming temperatures.

Challenge: By km 25-30 the sun is up and temperatures are climbing. Heat becomes the dominant factor for most runners.

Tactic: Reduce effort and rely on internal cues. Use sponges at aid stations on neck and wrists for evaporative cooling. Prioritize electrolytes over plain water.

km 34–42.195

Peddar Road Climb to CST Finish

Terrain: Inland climb through Peddar Road (km 33-35) at 10-12m elevation, then mostly flat return south through Marine Lines to CST

Challenge: The Peddar Road section is the last significant climb and comes when legs are most compromised by heat fatigue

Tactic: Walk the Peddar Road climb if needed. The flat final 5km into CST should feel familiar. Let the Azad Maidan finish crowd carry you home.

Race-Specific Training

  • Spend 4-6 weeks doing key long runs in the warmest, most humid conditions available to heat-acclimatize — run late morning rather than early morning for this purpose
  • Practice race-day nutrition and hydration at race pace in heat, targeting 500-750ml of fluid per hour with emphasis on electrolytes over plain water
  • Train with at least 3-4 early-morning long runs (3:30-4:00am wake-up) to calibrate your gut and fueling at the unusual race-day hour

Conditions & Environment

Altitude

Entirely at sea level (2-20m). No altitude concerns.

Weather

January. Nighttime lows around 18C (64F) climbing toward 28-30C (82-86F) by mid-morning. Humidity 70-85% at the 5:40am start. This is a hot marathon.

Sun & Wind

Sun rises around 7:15am. Runners finishing in 4+ hours face full sun. Sea breezes off the Arabian Sea are variable. The Bandra-Worli Sea Link is exposed to wind.

What to Wear

Minimal technical fabric. Anti-chafe liberally — sweat and distance make chafing far worse in humid conditions. Sunscreen even for the pre-dawn start. Lightweight breathable shoes over cushioned options.

Pacing Strategy

SegmentPaceNote
km 0-910-15 sec/km slower than cool-weather goal paceThe heat and humidity demand conservative pacing from the gun. Run by heart rate or effort.
km 9-21Adjusted goal pace by effortRun the flyover on effort. Stay relaxed on the Sea Link. Drink at every station.
km 21-34Effort-based, accept slower splits as heat buildsThe sun is rising and temperatures are climbing. Use sponges and ice. Electrolytes at every station.
km 34-42.195Whatever you have leftWalk Peddar Road if needed. The flat final 5km to CST is your reward for heat discipline.

Race Day Tip

Arrive in Mumbai at least 5-7 days before the race if coming from a cold climate. Heat acclimatization takes time and cannot be faked. Carry salt capsules or electrolyte chews as a supplement to on-course drinks — sodium loss in high humidity is the leading cause of late-race cramping.
