Course Map & Elevation
This route is generated and may not follow the exact official course.
Course Overview
A gently rolling loop course at ~519m elevation with only 100m of total climbing, starting and finishing at the 1972 Olympiapark. The Newton Hills equivalent here is a subtle but meaningful climb to 538m through the Nymphenburg district at km 30-34, arriving exactly when fatigue amplifies even modest gradients.
Key Segments
Olympiapark to English Garden
Terrain: Flat to gently rising through Schwabing into the English Garden, gradual climb from 519m to 532m
Challenge: Enthusiastic early crowds and the stunning autumn foliage of the English Garden tempt early surges; cobblestones near Marienplatz demand attention
Tactic: Lock pace by km 3. Shorten stride on any cobblestones through the Altstadt. Enjoy the English Garden but keep the heart rate honest.
Isar River Corridor
Terrain: Flat riverside paths along the Isar, well-surfaced and wide, descending gently from 528m to 525m
Challenge: Quieter crowd support; the straightforward terrain and long flat stretch can lull you into autopilot or unconscious pace creep
Tactic: Settle into metronomic rhythm. This is your controlled-effort section. Should feel relaxed and in control, not working hard.
Nymphenburg Palace Climb
Terrain: Gentle climb to course high point of 538m near km 33-34, then beginning to descend
Challenge: The km 30 physiological wall coincides with the only meaningful climb — modest on paper but significant on tired legs
Tactic: Shorten stride, maintain turnover, run by effort not pace. Do not panic if splits slow by 10-15 sec/km. Crest the high point knowing descent is coming.
Descent to Olympiapark Finish
Terrain: Gentle descent of ~18m back to Olympiapark and the 1972 Olympic stadium
Challenge: Fatigue masks the downhill opportunity; quads may protest the descent after 35km
Tactic: Use the downhill to open stride slightly. The Olympic stadium and tensile roof provide a powerful visual pull — let it carry you home.
Race-Specific Training
- •Practice long runs with a moderate hill effort at km 28-32 to simulate the Nymphenburg climb arriving on tired legs at the classic wall distance
- •Include at least two long runs on gently rolling terrain to build the muscular resilience for 100m of accumulated climbing spread across 42km
- •Run one or two training sessions on cobblestones or uneven surfaces to prepare ankles for the brief Altstadt historic-center section
Conditions & Environment
Altitude
Entire course at 513-538m above sea level. Sea-level PRs transfer directly without adjustment.
Weather
October race. Typical race-morning temps 5-15°C (41-59°F). Rain in roughly one of three years. Cold, dry conditions (8-12°C) tend to produce the fastest times.
Sun & Wind
Wind usually light within the city. Exposed sections along the Isar and near Nymphenburg Palace can be breezy. Autumn sun angle is low.
What to Wear
Layers you can strip and tie off. Moisture-wicking fabric essential. Apply anti-chafe generously if rain is possible.
Pacing Strategy
| Segment | Pace | Note |
|---|---|---|
| km 0-14 | Goal pace | Resist the opening excitement. Lock in by km 3. Enjoy the English Garden but stay disciplined. |
| km 14-28 | Goal pace | Isar riverside metronomic effort. Should feel relaxed and controlled. Take final gel by km 24. |
| km 28-35 | 5-15 sec/km slower than goal pace (effort-based) | Run by effort through the Nymphenburg climb. Accept slower splits. The high point is at km 33-34. |
| km 35-42.195 | Goal pace or faster | Gentle 18m descent to Olympiapark. Open your stride and let the crowd carry you into the stadium. |
Race Day Tip
The Nymphenburg Palace climb is only 12-15m of gain but it arrives at exactly km 30-34 — the distance where most marathon physiology breaks down. Runners who went out conservatively through the Isar section will feel it as a bump; runners who pushed will feel it as a wall.
