Course Overview
An exceptionally flat out-and-back loop course on the Nobi Plain with only 13m of total elevation range (2-15m), starting and finishing at Vantelin Dome. The course is one of the fastest women-only marathons in the world, and its flatness makes pacing discipline the single most important race variable.
Key Segments
Dome to Nagoya Castle
Terrain: Flat urban streets through the city center, with the only notable undulation around Nagoya Castle (km 10-14, a rise from ~8m to 15m)
Challenge: The March morning chill and electric crowd energy through Sakae tempt aggressive early pacing on the gentle terrain
Tactic: Run 5-10 sec/km slower than goal pace for the first 10km. Settle into race pace from km 10 onward. The castle undulation is the only gradient — use it to check your effort level.
Southern Run to Nagoya Port
Terrain: Dead flat at 2-5m elevation through southern industrial and residential districts toward the port turnaround
Challenge: Crowd support thins in the quieter southern neighborhoods; wide boulevards heading south can expose you to wind
Tactic: Lock into goal pace. Use the Atsuta Shrine (km 22) as a mental checkpoint. Take gel by km 22-24 before the quietest stretch. Check wind forecast for this section.
Return North to Dome
Terrain: Gradually rising from 2m back to 12m, essentially flat with imperceptible grade change
Challenge: The monotonous flat return can feel mentally grinding. If wind was in your face heading south, it may help here — or vice versa.
Tactic: If you ran the first half conservatively, begin pushing at km 35. Break the final 7km into 1km mental blocks. The dome finish has thunderous crowd support — save something for it.
Race-Specific Training
- •Focus on flat road tempo runs at race pace for 20-25km to build the specific muscular endurance a monotonously flat course demands
- •Strengthen hip flexors and glutes specifically — on flat courses, fatigue manifests as dropping cadence rather than slowing stride length
- •Practice race-pace efforts in conditions between 5-15°C (41-59°F) to acclimate to working hard in cool air, since the March afternoon start can bring rising temperatures
Conditions & Environment
Altitude
Entire course at 2-15m above sea level. No altitude concerns.
Weather
March race with early afternoon start. Typical temps 5-14°C (41-57°F) at start, potentially climbing to low teens by the time mid-pack runners reach later stages.
Sun & Wind
Afternoon sun is possible. Wide southern boulevards toward the port (km 27-35) are exposed to wind. Check forecast for wind direction — it determines whether the outbound or return leg is harder.
What to Wear
Light breathable layers. Thin long-sleeve or singlet. Throwaway layer for the start if morning is cold.
Pacing Strategy
| Segment | Pace | Note |
|---|---|---|
| km 0-14 | 5-10 sec/km slower than goal pace for first 10km, then goal pace | Conservative opening through the city. Settle into rhythm after the Nagoya Castle undulation. |
| km 14-31 | Goal pace | Dead flat through the southern districts. Discipline is everything. Do not drift faster just because it feels easy. |
| km 31-42.195 | Goal pace or faster if reserves remain | Begin gentle push at km 35 if energy is there. Save a final kick for the Vantelin Dome finish straight. |
Race Day Tip
Elite pacemakers lead sub-2:20 and sub-2:30 groups. If you are targeting a specific time, locate your pacer group before the start and use them as an anchor for the first 25-30km. The women-only field and international competition level mean you can find a cluster of similarly paced athletes easily.
