Course Overview

A net-downhill, point-to-point course dropping 105m from Calistoga (110m) to Napa (5m) along the scenic Silverado Trail through wine country. The gentle but sustained descent favors fast times and Boston qualification, but the rural course demands mental toughness through long stretches with minimal crowd support.

Key Segments

km 0–10

Calistoga to St. Helena

Terrain: Steady descent from 110m to 63m along the Silverado Trail through the upper Napa Valley. Gentle grade with minor undulations

Challenge: The downhill and cool morning tempt aggressive opening splits. The rural quiet can feel isolating early

Tactic: Run 5-10 sec/km slower than goal pace. Let gravity assist without pounding your quads. Enjoy the vineyard scenery and settle into rhythm.

km 10–21

St. Helena to Yountville

Terrain: Continued gentle descent from 63m to 36m through Rutherford and Oakville wine country. Mostly flat to slightly downhill

Challenge: The middle section of the Silverado Trail is beautiful but monotonous with sparse crowds. Halfway adrenaline at km 21 can prompt premature surging

Tactic: Settle into goal pace. Fuel consistently every 5km. Stay mentally engaged through the quiet vineyard stretches.

km 21–33

Yountville to Napa Outskirts

Terrain: Very gradual descent from 36m to 14m through Stags Leap District. The grade becomes almost imperceptible

Challenge: The loss of gravitational assist can feel like hitting a wall if you relied on the downhill. Quad fatigue accumulates

Tactic: Maintain goal effort. This is where negative splitting pays off — you should be accelerating through this section if you paced the first half correctly.

km 33–42.195

Napa City to Finish

Terrain: The flattest section of the course (14m to 5m). Urban roads through Napa neighborhoods to Vintage High School finish

Challenge: Nearly flat terrain on tired legs. No more downhill assist. The course can feel long if you spent your reserves early

Tactic: Push through the final 9km. The gradual transition from rural to urban brings building crowd support. Save a final gear for the last 3km into town.

Race-Specific Training

  • Run at least two long runs of 30-35km on a net-downhill route (1-2% grade) to simulate the Silverado Trail's sustained descent and condition quads for eccentric loading
  • Practice running alone on rural roads for 2+ hours with minimal external stimulation to build the mental toughness needed for Napa's quiet vineyard stretches
  • Train on cambered road shoulders, as sections of the Silverado Trail have uneven surfaces that stress the hips and ankles differently than flat paths

Conditions & Environment

Altitude

Start at 110m, finish at 5m. No altitude concerns. Net downhill of 105m.

Weather

Early March. Typical temps 6-16°C (43-61°F). Rain, fog, and gusty winds are all possible. Napa Valley mornings can be significantly cooler than afternoon conditions.

Sun & Wind

The Silverado Trail is exposed to both sun and wind with minimal tree cover in the vineyard sections. Crosswinds can be significant in the valley. Morning fog often burns off by midrace.

What to Wear

Disposable warm layer at the Calistoga start. Arm sleeves recommended. Light singlet and shorts underneath. Be prepared for rain — a light throwaway poncho can help through the first hour.

Pacing Strategy

SegmentPaceNote
km 0-105-10 sec/km slower than goal paceSteepest descent section. Bank energy, not time. The downhill masks true effort.
km 10-21Goal paceSettle into rhythm through the heart of wine country. Fuel consistently.
km 21-33Goal pace or slightly fasterBegin the negative split. The grade flattens but you should be accelerating on effort.
km 33-42.195Push to the finishFlattest section. Use building Napa crowds and the finish-line pull to maintain or increase pace.

Race Day Tip

The wine country air is deceptively dry despite cool temperatures. Start hydrating well before race day and take fluids at every aid station even if you do not feel thirsty. Many runners underestimate fluid loss on this course because the cool morning and gentle grade mask how hard they are working.
