Course Overview

A predominantly flat loop course along the Vltava River embankments at 184-208m elevation, with two meaningful 20m climbs: Letná Park (km 7-8) and Vyšehrad (km 28-29). The cobblestone start and finish through Old Town Square demand ankle attention, while May sun on exposed riverside sections can be deceptively punishing.

Key Segments

km 0–10

Old Town to Letná Park

Terrain: Cobblestones through Old Town, then climbing ~20m through Letná Park (185m to 207m) before descending into Stromovka

Challenge: Narrow crowded start on cobblestones, followed by the first real climb of the race through Letná with panoramic city views

Tactic: Accept a slow first km in the narrow streets — do not weave aggressively. Shorten stride on cobblestones. Take the Letná climb at controlled effort, not pace.

km 10–24

Vltava Riverside (North and East)

Terrain: Flat riverside paths through Holešovice and Karlín, descending gently to 184m along the Vltava embankment

Challenge: Long flat stretches can feel mentally monotonous. May sun on the exposed embankment with no shade is deceptively draining.

Tactic: Use bridges as mental landmarks — Palackého, Jiráskův, Most Legií. Maintain consistent effort, not pace. Hydrate at every station if sun is strong.

km 24–34

Vyšehrad Climb and South Bank

Terrain: Rising ~20m to the Vyšehrad fortress area (km 28-29, peaking at 208m), then descending back to the riverside at ~185m

Challenge: The second climb arrives at exactly the distance where marathon fatigue bites hardest — Vyšehrad on tired legs feels much harder than Letná did

Tactic: Run Vyšehrad by effort only. Accept 10-20 sec/km slower splits on the climb. The descent and Náplavka riverside offer recovery. Take gel before km 28.

km 34–42.195

Return Through Old Town

Terrain: Flat riverside then rising gently to 192m through Malá Strana and back into Old Town on cobblestones

Challenge: Tired legs on cobblestones for the final 1-2km. The Charles Bridge area and Pařížská street build atmosphere but demand footing attention.

Tactic: Stay relaxed through ankles and hips on the final cobblestone section. Let the Old Town Square crowd noise pull you to the finish.

Race-Specific Training

  • Include weekly tempo runs with two short hill efforts (each ~20m gain over 1km) to simulate the Letná and Vyšehrad climbs arriving at different fatigue states
  • Practice running on cobblestones or uneven surfaces to build ankle stability for the Old Town start and finish sections
  • Run at least two long runs with the final 10km including a moderate hill to simulate Vyšehrad arriving on tired legs at km 28

Conditions & Environment

Altitude

Course ranges from 184m to 208m. No altitude concerns.

Weather

May race. Typical race-morning temps 12-22°C (54-72°F). Cool years offer near-perfect conditions; warm years with exposed riverside sections become challenging after km 30.

Sun & Wind

May sun can be strong on exposed Vltava embankment sections with no shade. Wind is usually light but can channel along the river corridor.

What to Wear

Singlet and shorts for warm years. Light arm sleeves for cool starts. Sunscreen essential on exposed riverside sections even if air temps feel comfortable.

Pacing Strategy

SegmentPaceNote
km 0-10Goal pace (slower on Letná climb)Accept slow first km on cobblestones. Climb Letná by effort. Descend into Stromovka and settle into rhythm.
km 10-24Goal paceFlat riverside sections where time is made or lost. Use bridges as mental landmarks. Hydrate aggressively if sunny.
km 24-3410-20 sec/km slower on Vyšehrad climb, goal pace elsewhereRun Vyšehrad by effort only. Recover on the descent. This is the critical segment of the race.
km 34-42.195Goal pace or fasterFlat return with growing crowd support. Stay careful on final cobblestones. Let Old Town Square pull you home.

Race Day Tip

If the forecast shows temps above 18°C (64°F), adjust your target pace downward — the exposed Vltava embankment sections with no shade between km 15-25 and km 30-38 will drain you more than the air temperature suggests. Experienced Prague runners carry a small handheld bottle for the sunny stretches.
