Course Map & Elevation
Course Overview
A rolling urban loop course through Richmond's most distinctive neighborhoods with ~134m of total climbing and a net descent of 20m (start at 53m, finish at 33m). The course climbs to its high point of 79m near km 9, drops to its lowest at 16m through Shockoe Bottom at km 25, then rolls through the 55-65m range for the final third. The cumulative hills — particularly the sharp drop and climb through Shockoe Bottom and the sustained rollers through the west end — make this a course that rewards hill-trained runners with adaptable pacing. The one thing that makes Richmond unique is its sustained crowd energy through diverse neighborhoods, combined with punchy mid-race elevation swings that punish flat-course training.
Key Segments
Downtown Start and West End Climb
Terrain: Gradual climb from 53m at the start to the course high point of 79m near km 9, running west through residential neighborhoods before turning south
Challenge: The early climbing tempts runners to push too hard on the uphills, burning matches needed for the brutal km 22-28 section
Tactic: Run easy effort up the early grades. Keep heart rate controlled. You are climbing to the high point — do not race these hills.
Fan District and Carytown
Terrain: Significant descent from 63m down to 31m through the Fan District (km 10-15), then a sharp climb back to 62m through Carytown (km 18-19), before rolling down to 50m at the half
Challenge: Dense spectator energy on Monument Avenue and in Carytown can tempt surges; the 30m descent followed by a 30m climb is a bigger swing than most expect
Tactic: Channel crowd energy into form, not pace. Control the descent to the Fan — do not bank time. This is controlled effort territory — if you feel good at Carytown, you ran the first half correctly.
Shockoe Bottom Valley — The Crux
Terrain: The course's deepest valley: descend from 50m to the course low point of 16m at Shockoe Bottom (km 25), then a brutal 50m climb back up to 67m by km 29, followed by rolling terrain around 60-64m
Challenge: The single hardest section of the course — the steepest descent and the steepest climb back-to-back, arriving when cumulative fatigue begins to bite
Tactic: Shorten stride, drive arms, keep effort constant rather than pace constant. Accept 10-20 sec/km slower on the km 25-29 climb — budget for this.
Return to Downtown
Terrain: Rolling terrain between 53-61m through km 38, then a steady descent from 58m to 33m at the downtown riverfront finish
Challenge: Legs are worn from ~134m of cumulative climbing; the rolling terrain keeps demanding engagement but the final descent rewards patience
Tactic: Relatively gentle terrain compared to the crux — this is where conserved energy pays off. Ride the downhill to the finish at Brown's Island.
Race-Specific Training
- •Incorporate weekly hill repeats of 60-90 seconds at 5K effort to build the punch needed for the Shockoe Bottom climb and the Carytown rollers
- •Long runs of 29-35km must include sections of rolling terrain with 150-250m of total gain to simulate the cumulative toll of Richmond's hills
- •Practice effort-based pacing on climbs — learn what it feels like to keep effort constant while pace drops 10-20 sec/km on short steep grades
Conditions & Environment
Altitude
Course ranges from 16m to 79m. No altitude concerns.
Weather
November race. Typical temps 5-15C (41-59F) with low humidity — near-ideal marathon conditions. Rain is possible.
Sun & Wind
Moderate sun exposure through the open James River corridor. Richmond's neighborhoods provide wind shelter on most of the course. Humidity generally low.
What to Wear
Minimal layers — singlet and shorts for most conditions. Throwaway layer for the start if below 8C (46F). Arm warmers recommended for flexibility.
Pacing Strategy
| Segment | Pace | Note |
|---|---|---|
| km 0-10 | Goal pace or 5-10 sec/km slower on uphills | Climbing to the course high point at 79m. Keep effort easy on the grades and settle into rhythm. |
| km 10-22 | Goal pace | Controlled effort through the Fan and Carytown. Use crowd energy for form, not surging. |
| km 22-33 | 10-20 sec/km slower on the km 25-29 climb, goal pace on flats | Shockoe Bottom valley and the brutal climb out — effort-based running only. Accept the slowdown on the 50m climb. |
| km 33-42.195 | Goal pace or faster, with downhill finish | Rolling terrain that eases into a descent to the finish. This is where conserved energy pays off — ride the downhill home. |
Race Day Tip
The Shockoe Bottom valley (km 22-29) is the make-or-break section — a 50m drop to the course low point at 16m followed by the steepest climb of the day back to 67m. Runners who train on flat courses and push the early hills consistently blow up here. Arrive prepared for hills and you will pass dozens of faders in the final 10km.
