Course Map & Elevation
Course Overview
One of Europe’s flattest and fastest courses, tracing the Guadalquivir River plain at 8-15m elevation with under 100m of total gain. The February timing delivers near-ideal racing temperatures. The one thing that makes Seville unique is the combination of dead-flat terrain and stunning Andalusian architecture that constantly tempts you to surge.
Key Segments
Estadio to Cathedral Quarter
Terrain: Flat city streets through historic Seville, passing the Cathedral, Giralda tower, and Plaza Nueva
Challenge: Electric start energy at the Estadio Olímpico and spectacular early architecture through the cathedral quarter tempt aggressive opening splits
Tactic: Treat the first 10km as a controlled warmup at target pace. Resist banking time. The flat terrain will not give you free speed later.
Plaza de España to Triana
Terrain: Flat with one minor bridge gradient at Puente de Isabel II (km 18-19). Through María Luisa Park and crossing into Triana.
Challenge: The visually stunning Plaza de España tempts surging. The bridge incline is shallow but enough to disrupt rhythm at half-marathon distance.
Tactic: Enjoy the landmarks but stay anchored to pace data. Shorten stride going up the bridge, maintain effort rather than pace, recover on the flat immediately after.
Isla de la Cartuja Riverside
Terrain: Wide, flat, open riverside stretch along the Expo '92 site beside the Guadalquivir
Challenge: Exposed to prevailing west/southwest February winds — potentially a headwind on the outbound leg. Crowd support is thinner.
Tactic: Tuck behind a pace group to break the headwind. Conserve energy for km 35 onward. This is the patience section of the race.
Final Urban Approach
Terrain: Flat city streets through northern Seville back to the Estadio Olímpico
Challenge: Accumulated fatigue on a course with zero downhill recovery sections. If wind was against you on the Cartuja, you may have a tailwind here.
Tactic: If you ran conservatively through the Cartuja, this is your payoff. Push from km 35 if reserves remain. Use the tailwind if available.
Race-Specific Training
- •Focus on long race-pace tempo runs of 20-25km on flat terrain — Seville offers no downhills for recovery, so your legs must sustain identical effort patterns for the full distance
- •Schedule your long run build during November through January to match the February race date, committing to cold-weather weekend long runs that build the fitness for the final 10km
- •Practice running into a headwind in training to prepare for the potentially exposed Isla de la Cartuja riverside section
Conditions & Environment
Altitude
Entire course at 8-15m above sea level. No altitude concerns.
Weather
February race. Race-morning temps typically 8-12°C (46-54°F), rising to 16-18°C (61-64°F) by late morning. Occasionally warmer.
Sun & Wind
Prevailing February winds from west/southwest can create a headwind on the Isla de la Cartuja riverside (km 28-33). Andalusian sun can be warm even in February.
What to Wear
Single light layer. You will feel cold at the start but warm quickly. Do not overdress.
Pacing Strategy
| Segment | Pace | Note |
|---|---|---|
| km 0-10 | Goal pace | Controlled warmup through the cathedral quarter. Do not bank time in the opening excitement. |
| km 10-22 | Goal pace | Steady through Plaza de España and Triana. Maintain effort over the bridge. Gel at km 20. |
| km 22-33 | Goal pace (tuck in if headwind) | Patience section along the Cartuja. Draft behind a pace group if wind is against you. Conserve energy. |
| km 33-42.195 | Goal pace or faster | The payoff for patience. Push from km 35 if you have reserves. Use any tailwind advantage on the return. |
Race Day Tip
Seville is a smaller field than the World Marathon Majors, which means less congestion and more space to run your own race from the gun. Find your target-pace group early at the Estadio Olímpico start and settle in with them — the official pacers for common goal times are well-organized and reliable.
