Course Overview

A flat city-loop course through three of Shanghai's most iconic districts — Huangpu, Jing'an, and Xuhui. Starting at The Bund with dramatic Pudong skyline views, the route threads through colonial-era boulevards, modern commercial streets, and quiet riverside greenways before finishing at Xujiahui Sports Park. Total elevation gain is just 37m, making this one of Asia's fastest marathon courses. The only notable incline is the Nanpu Bridge approach ramp around km 27.

Key Segments

km 0–10

The Bund to Jing'an Temple

Terrain: Flat city streets at 4-6m elevation. Wide boulevards through Shanghai's historic and commercial core.

Challenge: The spectacular Bund start with Pudong skyline views and enormous crowd support creates an adrenaline surge that tempts aggressive early splits.

Tactic: Run 5-10 sec/km slower than goal pace. Soak in the atmosphere but protect your energy. The first 10km are not where this race is won.

km 10–21

Xintiandi to Riverside Greenway

Terrain: Flat urban streets transitioning to riverside path. Mix of commercial and residential areas along the Huangpu River.

Challenge: Crowd support thins after leaving the city center. The transition to quieter riverside sections can cause loss of focus and rhythm.

Tactic: Settle into goal pace and focus on consistent fueling. Take every aid station — November humidity can be deceptive.

km 21–32

Longteng Avenue and Nanpu Bridge

Terrain: Riverside greenway with one notable incline — the Nanpu Bridge approach ramp around km 27 rises to ~11m before descending back to 5m.

Challenge: The Nanpu Bridge ramp is the only real elevation change on the course, arriving right at the traditional wall distance. The psychological impact exceeds the physical difficulty.

Tactic: Maintain effort-based pacing over the bridge — don't fight for pace on the ramp, let it come back on the descent. This is where disciplined runners gain places.

km 32–42.195

Longhua Road to Xujiahui Sports Park

Terrain: Flat urban streets through Xuhui district with several tight turns approaching the finish.

Challenge: Flat fatigue in the final 10km. Several sharp turns disrupt rhythm and require deceleration and re-acceleration.

Tactic: Run the tangents and prepare for each turn. Crowd support builds in the final 2km entering the sports park. Save your kick for the last 400m.

Race-Specific Training

  • Build long runs on flat terrain to develop the specific muscular endurance needed for a course with no topographic variation to shift load between muscle groups.
  • Practice running in 10-15°C conditions with moderate humidity. Shanghai's late November weather can swing between crisp and unexpectedly mild — prepare for both.
  • Include bridge simulation in training: 200-300m gradual uphill at marathon pace, followed by controlled descent. This prepares for the Nanpu Bridge approach without overcomplicating training.

Conditions & Environment

Altitude

Course between 4m and 11m above sea level. No altitude considerations.

Weather

Late November / early December. Start temps typically 9-12°C (48-54°F), rising to 15-18°C (59-64°F) by mid-morning. Occasional years are warmer. Light rain possible.

Sun & Wind

Variable cloud cover. Buildings provide wind shelter through most of the urban sections. The riverside greenway (km 15-30) is more exposed to wind off the Huangpu River.

What to Wear

Singlet and shorts for most runners. Arm sleeves or light gloves at the start that can be discarded by km 5. Warmer years may require sun protection.

Pacing Strategy

SegmentPaceNote
km 0-105-10 sec/km slower than goal paceThe Bund start and Nanjing Road crowds create adrenaline. Bank discipline, not time.
km 10-21Goal paceSettle in through Xintiandi and the riverside. Consistent fueling is critical.
km 21-32Goal pace, effort-based over the bridgeNanpu Bridge ramp is short — maintain effort, let pace adjust. Recover on descent.

Race Day Tip

Shanghai Metro Line 2 serves The Bund start area (East Nanjing Road station). The finish at Xujiahui Sports Park is served by Lines 1, 4, and 11 (Xujiahui station). Allow 30 minutes for security screening at Metro entrances on race morning. Registration is via the Shangma App — download it before traveling.
