Course Overview

A net-downhill, point-to-point course dropping approximately 290m (955 ft) from Forest City to downtown Scranton along the historic Lackawanna Railroad grade, with 300m of total climbing concentrated in rolling hills through Carbondale, Archbald, and late-race Scranton neighborhoods. This is one of the most popular Boston Qualifier courses in the Northeast, but the sustained downhill demands specific eccentric quad training that flat-road preparation cannot provide.

Key Segments

km 0–10

Forest City to Carbondale Descent

Terrain: Sustained steep descent from 290m to 240m, averaging 0.5% downgrade through the Lackawanna headwaters

Challenge: The steepest sustained descent on the course — fresh legs and gravitational pull tempt aggressive early splits that destroy quads for the second half

Tactic: Run 10-15 sec/km slower than goal pace. Shorten stride, increase cadence to 170-180 spm, and avoid heel-braking. This section is investment, not racing.

km 10–21.1

Carbondale to Olyphant: Rolling Mid-Course

Terrain: Rolling hills between 225-242m with genuine climbs around Archbald (km 12-14) and Jessup (km 16-18)

Challenge: The course is not a simple ramp — these rollers arrive when quads are already accumulating eccentric fatigue from the opening descent

Tactic: Shift to effort-based running on the uphills, recover on the downs. Take final pre-wall gel by km 20. Settle into goal pace on the flatter stretches.

km 21.1–35

Olyphant to Scranton: Late-Race Rollers

Terrain: Continued descent from 225m to 207m with notable uphills at km 31 (climbing to 224m) and km 35 (climbing to 218m)

Challenge: The km 31 climb is the course's most significant late uphill — 19m gain that feels enormous on tired, eccentric-loaded legs

Tactic: Do not panic at the km 31 hill. Shorten stride, stay tall, and accept 15-20 sec/km slower than goal pace on the climb. The descent after rewards patience.

km 35–42.195

Downtown Scranton Finish

Terrain: Gently rolling between 200-210m through urban Scranton with minor ups and downs, finishing flat at 200m

Challenge: Accumulated quad damage from 35km of downhill meets late-race fatigue — this is where patient runners separate from aggressive ones

Tactic: Use the growing downtown Scranton crowd support. If you conserved early, you have legs to maintain or push pace. The final 2km are crowd-lined and energizing.

Race-Specific Training

  • Begin dedicated downhill running 10-12 weeks out — start with 20-30 minute gentle downhill segments and build to sustained 10-15km net-dropping long runs to condition quads for eccentric load
  • Include weekly rolling hill workouts that alternate descent and climb to prepare for the mid-course rollers around Carbondale and Archbald
  • Choose race shoes with good heel and midsole cushioning (6-10mm drop) — the cushioning difference over 42km of downhill running is substantial compared to flat courses

Conditions & Environment

Altitude

Start at 290m, finish at 200m. No altitude concerns. Net downhill of 90m.

Weather

October race. Typical temperatures 5-15°C (41-59°F) at race time, with cool mornings and crisp air — near-ideal marathon conditions.

Sun & Wind

Valley terrain provides some wind shelter in early miles, but exposed sections through open farmland north of Scranton can produce headwinds in the final 8-10km. Morning sun angle is low through the valley.

What to Wear

Layers for the pre-race staging area. Plan to shed by km 3-5. A 5°C start will warm to 12-15°C by the time you finish.

Pacing Strategy

SegmentPaceNote
km 0-1010-15 sec/km slower than goal paceThe steep descent is not free speed — it is eccentric loading. Bank restraint, not time.
km 10-21.1Goal pace on flats, effort-based on rollersAccept slower splits on the Archbald climbs. Recover on descents without overstriding.
km 21.1-35Goal pace, effort-based on km 31 and km 35 climbsThe km 31 hill is the crux. Run it by feel, then use the descent to recover and re-establish pace.
km 35-42.195Goal pace or fasterIf you ran conservatively early, the flat-to-gentle downtown finish rewards patience with a strong close.

Race Day Tip

Fuel consistently from the start even though perceived effort feels low on the downhill — your muscles are burning glycogen to manage eccentric loading at the same rate as flat running, and underfueling because the effort feels easy is the most common Steamtown mistake.
