Course Overview

Virtually flat loop course with only 10m of total elevation gain, starting and finishing at the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias. Valencia is one of the fastest marathon courses in the world, with multiple world records set here thanks to the pancake-flat roads, wide boulevards, and near-ideal December weather.

Key Segments

km 0–10

Turia Gardens & City Centre

Terrain: Flat, sheltered tree-lined paths through the old Turia riverbed park, then narrower streets through the historic centre

Challenge: The smooth, flat opening and race-morning adrenaline conspire to push you 5-10 sec/km too fast

Tactic: Run the first 5km at or slightly slower than goal pace. Use the Turia Gardens shade to stay relaxed and lock into rhythm.

km 15–22

Port & Beach Exposure

Terrain: Flat, wide roads heading east toward the port and Malvarrosa beach; fully exposed to sea breeze

Challenge: Most exposed section of the course. If there is any wind on race day, it comes off the Mediterranean here. Crowds thin near the port (km 17-19).

Tactic: Tuck behind a pace group and share the workload through the exposed stretch. Stay patient — the noise picks up as you re-enter the urban core.

km 22–35

City Return Boulevards

Terrain: Flat, dead-straight wide avenues back through the city, including Blasco Ibanez and Gran Via

Challenge: Long straight roads with no terrain variation can lead to mental drift. This is where pacing discipline matters most.

Tactic: Hold goal pace and tick off the kilometres. The flatness is your friend — nothing breaks your rhythm, so stay locked in.

km 35–42.195

Turia Return to Finish

Terrain: Flat return along the Turia riverbed toward the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences complex

Challenge: Fatigue accumulates but the spectacular finish architecture provides a mental lift

Tactic: Use any remaining energy here. The finish alongside the Palau de les Arts and Hemisferic is stunning — let it carry you.

Race-Specific Training

  • Focus on sustained tempo work and marathon-pace long runs of 10-15km segments rather than hill training — Valencia rewards aerobic fitness and pacing discipline above all
  • Practice fuelling at race pace on flat terrain, since there are no natural slow-down points where taking gels is easier
  • Include at least one long run specifically practising even or negative splits to build the restraint needed on a course this fast

Conditions & Environment

Altitude

Sea level (5-14m). No altitude concerns.

Weather

Early December. Typical race-morning temps 10-17C (50-63F). Near-ideal conditions for distance running. Occasional warm years can reach 20C (68F).

Sun & Wind

Morning sun is low and manageable. Easterly sea breeze possible on the port/beach sections (km 15-22). Low humidity in December.

What to Wear

December mornings feel cool at the start but you will warm up within the first 2km. Wear minimal clothing; a disposable layer for the start is recommended.

Pacing Strategy

SegmentPaceNote
km 0-10Goal pace or 3-5 sec/km slowerResist the temptation to bank time on the flat opener. Settle in.
km 15-22Goal paceExposed port/beach section. Draft behind other runners if windy. Do not surge.
km 22-35Goal paceLock in on the wide return boulevards. Take final gel by km 30.
km 35-42.195Goal pace or fasterThe payoff for discipline. Use the spectacular finish architecture as motivation to push.

Race Day Tip

Hydration stations are every 5km with water and isotonic drinks. December humidity is low, so you may not feel thirsty — drink at every station to avoid a late-race deficit. Arrive 2-3 days early to adjust to the timezone and walk the finish area.
