Course Overview

A net-downhill point-to-point course dropping ~90m from Bath, NY (320m) to Corning, NY (230m) through Finger Lakes wine country, with 50m of total climbing. One of the most celebrated Boston Qualifier courses in the northeastern US, the Wineglass combines genuine course speed with community charm and fall scenery. The terrain is not uniformly downhill — several short climbs interspersed among the descents catch undertrained runners off guard.

Key Segments

km 0–10

Bath Descent and Savona

Terrain: Dramatic 12m drop in the opening mile, then gradual descent from 308m to 302m with a brief roller near Savona. Painted Post Trail (paved off-road) adds variety.

Challenge: The first mile descent combined with race-morning adrenaline makes it very easy to go 10-15 sec/km too fast — the most dangerous section for BQ chasers

Tactic: Resist the gravitational assist. Run 5-10 sec/km slower than goal pace. Use the Painted Post Trail through Savona to settle into rhythm.

km 10–21

Rolling Hills to Campbell

Terrain: A ~9m climb near km 15 (the course's most notable uphill), then descent to 265m at Campbell where the half marathon course joins

Challenge: The modest climb catches runners who are already in oxygen debt from the opening descent. Half marathoners join at Campbell, changing the energy.

Tactic: Shorten stride on the km 15 climb, stay relaxed. Arrive at the half in 1-2 minutes slower than target half time for a negative-split finish.

km 21–35

Coopers Plains to Painted Post — The BQ Stretch

Terrain: Course flattens significantly, gentle descent from 265m to 234m through the widest part of the valley. Wine country farmland with little shade.

Challenge: No gravitational assistance anymore — this is where BQ attempts are won or lost. The valley funnels northwest winds that can add 15-20 sec/km to effort.

Tactic: If headwind, build in 5-10 sec/km buffer and relax into it. Run strong and steady. Half marathoners may overtake you — stay on your own plan.

km 35–42.195

Corning Finish — Market Street

Terrain: Nearly flat from 234m to 230m through Corning's outskirts, across the pedestrian bridge over the Chemung River, and onto Market Street

Challenge: Eccentric quad fatigue from 35km of downhill meets the flat finish; going too early before the bridge leaves you grinding the last 500m

Tactic: Start your finishing kick at the pedestrian bridge (km 41), not earlier. The Market Street crowd will carry you through the final stretch.

Race-Specific Training

  • Incorporate controlled descents at goal pace in long runs to condition quads for repeated eccentric loading — this course demands downhill-specific preparation
  • Train in variable wind conditions, as the Finger Lakes valley funnels northwest breezes that can make the flat km 22-35 stretch significantly harder than the profile suggests
  • Practice negative-split long runs where you arrive at the halfway point 1-2 minutes conservative and run the second half at or faster than goal pace

Conditions & Environment

Altitude

Start at 320m, finish at 230m. No altitude concerns.

Weather

Early October race. Typical temps 5-15C (41-59F) at the start, warming to 12-16C (54-61F) by finish. Near-ideal marathon conditions. Morning fog in the valley is common.

Sun & Wind

The valley funnels northwest winds that hit hardest on the exposed km 22-35 stretch. Wine country farmland offers little shade. October rain is possible (~85mm monthly average).

What to Wear

Lightweight disposable layer for the Bath start area. Race in singlet and shorts with arm warmers. Pack rain-capable gear as a contingency.

Pacing Strategy

SegmentPaceNote
km 0-105-10 sec/km slower than goal paceDramatic early descent. Bank energy, not time. Settle into rhythm through Savona.
km 10-21Goal paceRoll through the km 15 climb without surging. Arrive at the half conservative for a negative split.
km 21-35Goal pace (adjust for wind)The BQ stretch. Flat terrain, potential headwind. Stay steady and effort-based.
km 35-42.195Goal pace or fasterThe payoff for patience. Start kick at the pedestrian bridge. Market Street finish is electric.

Race Day Tip

The race sells out months in advance — register early. Shuttles from Corning to the Bath start fill quickly, so arrive at the shuttle area well ahead of time. The pedestrian bridge over the Chemung River at km 41 is your signal to kick — not before.
