Course Overview

A scenic coastal loop circling Xiamen Island along Huandao Road, mostly flat at 3-25m elevation with two gentle rises on the eastern headland (km 8-10) and southwestern arc (km 22-27). January subtropical conditions with ~65-70% humidity are the primary challenge for runners traveling from colder, drier climates.

Key Segments

km 0–14

Convention Center to Eastern Headland

Terrain: Gradually rising from 5m to the course high point of 25m around km 10, then descending back to 10m along the eastern coast

Challenge: Intoxicating sea views and crowd energy along the waterfront tempt fast opening splits. The gentle climb to the eastern headland is barely noticeable but adds cumulative cost.

Tactic: Set goal pace from the gun and trust it. Let the eastern headland climb be an easy effort. Use the descent to Zengcuoan as free recovery.

km 14–21

Southern Shoreline

Terrain: Descending from 10m to the flat southwestern shore at 3-5m. Wide palm-lined Huandao South Road.

Challenge: The flat coastal tailwinds and headwinds shift based on your heading — perceived effort fluctuates and GPS pace can be misleading

Tactic: Use heart rate or effort feel rather than GPS pace alone. The halfway point arrives here — take stock of effort level honestly.

km 21–35

Southwestern Arc and University

Terrain: Rising gently from 5m to 22m through the southwestern peninsula (km 22-27), then descending back to 5m. Past Xiamen University and Baicheng Beach.

Challenge: The second gentle climb (km 22-27) is not technically difficult but arrives in the fatiguing middle third of the race. Aid station nutrition may differ from your training products.

Tactic: Treat the climb as easy effort and let gravity reward you on the descent. Carry your own gels — do not rely solely on on-course nutrition.

km 35–42.195

Western Coast to Finish

Terrain: Flat at 5-6m, then a modest late-race rise to 17m around km 37-39 before descending to the 5m finish

Challenge: The late-race climb around km 37-39 catches tired runners by surprise. It is modest but significant at this stage of the marathon.

Tactic: Bank energy before km 35 for this climb. Run it by effort. The final descent to the Convention Center finish is your reward — open stride and push.

Race-Specific Training

  • If traveling from a cold/dry climate, arrive at least 3 days early and train in warmer or more humid environments in the final 4 weeks to prepare for Xiamen’s January humidity (~65-70%)
  • Include sustained flat threshold runs of 30km or more with 10-15km at goal pace to match the flat, sustained-effort nature of the coastal course
  • Practice running with a 5-10 sec/km conservative buffer in your first long runs at humid conditions, then calibrate your actual race pace based on acclimatization

Conditions & Environment

Altitude

Course ranges from 3m to 25m above sea level. No altitude concerns.

Weather

January race. Typical temps 10-18°C (50-64°F). Humidity 65-70%, notably higher than dry-winter climates.

Sun & Wind

Midday sun at 24°N latitude can be deceptively strong on open coastal road even in January. Exposed eastern and western coastal stretches can have crosswinds or headwinds depending on direction.

What to Wear

Single breathable layer. Light long-sleeve for start, shed early if warming. Apply sunscreen even in January.

Pacing Strategy

SegmentPaceNote
km 0-14Goal paceResist the sea-view excitement. Let the eastern headland climb be easy effort. Descend to Zengcuoan in control.
km 14-21Goal paceFlat coastal running. Use effort feel, not GPS, as wind shifts affect pace readings. Honest self-assessment at halfway.
km 21-35Goal pace (easy effort on km 22-27 climb)Southwestern arc climb is the patience section. Let gravity help on the descent. Carry your own gels.
km 35-42.195Goal pace or faster after km 39 descentBank energy for the km 37-39 rise. Run it by effort. Open stride on the final descent to the Convention Center finish.

Race Day Tip

The on-course nutrition is primarily water and sports drink with limited solid food — if you are racing competitively, carry 2-3 of your own tested gels. International runners who rely on on-course energy products often find they differ from what they trained with.
