Course Map & Elevation

Course Overview
A lakeside loop course at 406-430m elevation with one meaningful climb on the eastern bank (km 27-30, gaining ~12m to the 430m peak), starting and finishing near Quaibrücke on Lake Zurich. The first 21km along the western lakeshore are essentially flat, making the eastern-bank climb feel harder than it is because it arrives at exactly the distance where fatigue first bites.
Key Segments
Western Lakeshore Out-and-Back
Terrain: Flat lakeshore promenade along Seestrasse south to Kilchberg turnaround and back, 406-413m
Challenge: Festive atmosphere and stunning Alpine-backdrop lake views push early pacing too aggressive. Possible headwind on either the outbound or return leg.
Tactic: Build negative splits into your plan: run the first half 30-60 seconds slower than goal half-marathon pace. Use the Kilchberg turnaround as a mental reset.
Lake Crossing to Eastern Shore
Terrain: Crossing at Bellevue/Quaibrücke, then following the eastern lakeshore through Tiefenbrunnen and Zollikon, gently rising from 415m to 418m
Challenge: Crowds thin on the quieter eastern shore. The imperceptible upward drift from km 18-21 can mask pace creep.
Tactic: Do not surge after crossing the lake. This is the transition to the harder half. Maintain goal pace and prepare mentally for the climb ahead.
Küsnacht Hills — Course Peak
Terrain: Climbing 12m over 3km through residential streets to the course peak at 430m, then descending
Challenge: Not a severe climb, but it arrives at km 27-30 — the classic marathon wall distance. Fatigued legs amplify even modest gradients.
Tactic: Shorten stride, maintain cadence, run by effort not pace. Accept 10-15 sec/km slower splits. The descent from km 30-35 is your reward.
Descent and Lakeside Finish
Terrain: Descending from 430m to 408m through Seefeld back to Quaibrücke. Final km along Utoquai lakeside promenade.
Challenge: Quads fatigued from the Kilchberg out-and-back and eastern hill may protest the descent. Crowd support rebuilds toward Bellevue.
Tactic: Use the downhill to open stride if reserves remain. The Utoquai promenade and growing crowd noise at Bellevue carry you through the final 2km.
Race-Specific Training
- •Include km 25-32 simulation runs at goal pace on gently rolling terrain to practice maintaining form and cadence when the Küsnacht hills arrive on tired legs
- •Add weekly downhill running practice to prepare quads for the descent from km 30-35 after they have already absorbed the Kilchberg out-and-back pounding
- •Deliberately seek out cold morning runs below 8°C (46°F) in the month before the race to acclimate to cold-start April conditions in Zurich
Conditions & Environment
Altitude
Course ranges from 406m to 430m. Sea-level PRs transfer directly without adjustment.
Weather
April race. Start temps typically 5-10°C (41-50°F), warming to 10-15°C (50-59°F). Rain is genuinely probable — April frontal systems are common in the Alpine basin.
Sun & Wind
Open lakeshore sections (km 1-10 and km 11-20) can have headwind depending on the day. On clear days, Alpine panorama visible across the lake.
What to Wear
Lightweight arm sleeves or thin gloves for the start — easily discarded. Wet-weather gear (anti-chafe, moisture-wicking) if rain is forecast. Never race in new shoes.
Pacing Strategy
| Segment | Pace | Note |
|---|---|---|
| km 0-18 | Slightly conservative — 30-60 sec slower than goal HM pace for the half | Flat western lakeshore. Resist the scenery-driven temptation to surge. Bank energy, not time. |
| km 18-27 | Goal pace | Eastern shore transition. Settle into rhythm after the lake crossing. Prepare mentally for the climb. |
| km 27-31 | 10-15 sec/km slower than goal pace (effort-based) | Küsnacht hills. Run by effort, not pace. The peak is at km 30 — everything after is downhill or flat. |
| km 31-42.195 | Goal pace or faster | The payoff descent. Open stride through Seefeld. Let the growing Bellevue crowd carry you to Quaibrücke. |
Race Day Tip
If racing in rain (common in April), apply anti-chafe product more generously than you think necessary and choose shoes with adequate wet-grip that you have already run at least 100km in. Wet cobblestones and road markings near the Bellevue crossing can be slippery at race pace.
